The Staff Accountant is responsible for preparing, maintaining, and analyzing financial records to support accurate reporting of the organization’s assets, liabilities, revenue, expenses, tax obligations, and overall financial performance. This role supports month-end close, account reconciliations, audit preparation, and compliance with established accounting standards and procedures.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Performs general ledger, cost accounting, and related accounting duties in support of accurate financial reporting.
- Prepares monthly balance sheets, income statements, profit and loss statements, and other financial reports.
- Maintains the general ledger and ensures transactions are recorded accurately and timely.
- Codes invoices, establishes new accounts, reconciles accounts, and supports month-end close activities.
- Reconciles bank accounts at least monthly, verifies deposits, and responds to banking inquiries as needed.
- Reconciles cash disbursement accounts, payroll, customer accounts, and other financial accounts; supports accounts receivable collections.
- Reviews and processes accounts payable invoices, ensuring payments are charged to the appropriate accounts.
- Assists external auditors by gathering account information, documentation, and analysis for the annual audit.
- Prepares and files tax forms with federal, state, and local government agencies as required.
- Coordinates with software vendors to maintain accounting systems and recommends updates to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Manages the purchasing and invoicing system.
- Maintains current knowledge of accepted accounting practices, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
- Solid knowledge of general financial accounting and cost accounting principles.
- Ability to apply generally accepted accounting principles and follow established accounting policies and procedures.
- Ability to prepare accurate tax reports and supporting documentation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software and accounting systems.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- At least three years of related accounting experience required.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
