GENERAL DEFINITION: The primary responsibility of this position will be to perform emergency and non-emergency situations to administer basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a ranked shift supervisor, with indirect supervision from the Captain or Chief.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: No supervisory duties.
DUTIES:
Administer first aid treatment or basic life support care.
- Receives and responds to a series of emergency categories involving fire & EMS department responses, and emergency ambulance service.
- Drives and operates specially equipped emergency vehicles in a safe and expeditious manner in response to medical and other emergencies, including emergent and non-emergent transport of patients to health care facilities, and the transport of the deceased.
- Extricates patients from entrapment, assesses extent of injury, use prescribed techniques applicable to the level of licensure, including requests for additional service assistance and other resources.
- Provides initial on-site assessment of patient’s condition to determine the nature and extent of illness or injury and other pre-existing medical conditions.
- Monitors and maintains radio communication with authorized medical personnel at emergency treatment facility; provide detailed patient report, obtains instructions regarding further treatment.
- Completes and submits patient care and/or department required information and records per established procedure.
- Performs Basic level life support using all approved EMT-Basic level practices and approved medication for the pre-hospital setting.
- Administers Emergency Medical care to sick or injured persons and those overcome by smoke or fire.
- Responds to automobile collisions and will be required to extricate victims and providing emergency medical treatment.
- Communicates with dispatch or health care facility to provide information about situation, to arrange reception of the victim (s), or to receive instructions for further treatment.
- Responds to fire drills.
Participates in EMS and Fire related in-service training and demonstrations.
- Assists in community education programs in injury prevention and selected community health services, including vaccinations for the community.
- Engages in formal and informal courses related to emergency medical services, operation of automated medical equipment, firefighting equipment, and learning firefighting techniques and practices.
- Participates in presentations to all schools and community.
- Participate in department physical fitness requirements.
Performs routine maintenance (not requiring a mechanic) on emergency vehicles.
- Checks emergency vehicles for operational readiness including fluid levels, tires, belts hoses, communication and electrical equipment.
- Ensures cleanliness of vehicles.
- Cleans and washes the interior and exterior.
- Disinfect vehicles before and after each transport.
- Restocks a variety of supplies in the emergency vehicles.
Maintains duty station work areas and living quarters in a clean and orderly manner.
- Performs general housekeeping duties.
- Washes and cleans response vehicles after use and periodically as the need arises.
- Occasionally will clean fire hoses and firefighting equipment.
- Maintains a clean and orderly uniform and all program issued equipment.
Basic Structural firefighting awareness and techniques.
- Preventing, combating and extinguishing fires with the goal of protecting lives, the environment and property.
- Analyzing hazardous situations and thinking of quick solutions and actions.
- Teaching and participating in training classes and drills.
- Performs fire apparatus checks, checking of firefighting equipment, ensures vehicle operations readiness.
- Responsible for maintaining personal firefighting gear and breathing (SCBA) is in good working condition at all times.
- Engages in formal and informal courses related to firefighting equipment, learning of firefighting techniques.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Knowledge of methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services. Ability to administer first aid treatment or basic level life support care. Knowledge of medical terminology. Good knowledge of principles and practices used in modern structural fire suppression and rescue work. Knowledge of safe methods for lifting, moving, and transporting injured persons. Skilled in identifying and dealing with emergencies. Ability to keep composure under stressful situations. Minimal knowledge in the use variety of power tools and equipment kept on all apparatuses. Good knowledge of community residents and the Pueblo of Zuni master street address guides and rural addressing systems. Basic knowledge of the Police Ten Codes. Ability to follow verbal & written instructions, as well as read and write narrative reports. Knowledge of the Privacy Act of 1974 and HIPAA Regulations. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Ability to lift heavy objects. Ability to use a two-way radio system. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers, Tribal employees, medical staff at emergency facilities, and the general public.
TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: High school graduate or equivalent with at least (1) year of work experience in emergency medical services.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES: Must have a valid New Mexico Driver’s License with not DWI/DUI convictions within the past three (3) years. Driving is an essential part of the duties.
- Must possess a State of New Mexico Class “E” Driver’s License or must be able to obtain within one (1) year of employment.
- Must have licensure as a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT Basic).
- American Heart Association (AHA) BLS, CPR/First Aid
- Incident Commend System (ICS) Level 100 or higher
- National Incident Management System (NIMS) Awareness (FEMA IS-700 or equivalent)
- Hazardous Materials: Awareness and Operations Certification – Must obtain within one (1) year of employment (Dependent on course availability).
- Firefighter I Certification – Must obtain within one year. (Dependent on course availability).
- Firefighter II Certification – Must obtain within one year. (Dependent on course availability).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Performs strenuous work under hazardous and adverse conditions. Requires arduous physical exertion under unusual circumstances. There will be some standing and/or walking for long periods of time. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl in various situations. Requires frequent lifting of up to 150 lbs. Work is generally performed in indoor and outdoor settings in emergencies and extremely stressful situations. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, smoke, toxic or caustic chemicals, blood borne pathogens, hazardous material and infectious disease. Situations occur where surgical masks, safety goggles, gloves, protective face shields, firefighting bunker gear and SCBA equipment are needed. High degree of self-control in high stress situations. Must be in very good physical condition.
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Position is subject to Pre-Employment drug testing. The position is Safety Sensitive and will be subject to random drug screening for duration of employment. Must undergo and successfully pass a thorough background check including FBI Fingerprint check. Will be required to pass an annual medical examination. Will be required to work shifts, weekends, on-call duty and Holidays. Requires compliance with the Pueblo of Zuni Drug Free Workplace Policy. Must be insurable.
