Position summary

L.L. Vann Electric, Inc. is seeking an experienced Electrical Estimator to prepare accurate, competitive bids for commercial projects ranging from $10,000 service work to $35,000,000 new construction. The role reports to the Chief Estimator / Director of Preconstruction and is based in Raleigh, NC. 

Key responsibilities

Bid preparation

  • Review plans, specifications, addenda and RFPs to define scope, exclusions and risks for each bid.
  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for power distribution, lighting, branch wiring, fire alarm, low voltage, site utilities and special systems.
  • Build labor and material estimates using company labor units, historical data and current vendor pricing.
  • Solicit, level and analyze quotes from suppliers and subcontractors for gear, lighting packages, fire alarm, controls and other specialty scopes.
  • Prepare clear bid proposals with qualifications, clarifications, alternates and unit pricing.


    Project range

  • Turn around small projects ($10K to $500K) quickly and accurately, often within days.
  • Lead large, complex bids ($1M to $35M).
  • Develop budgets and conceptual estimates from schematic or incomplete drawings.


    Collaboration and hand-off

  • Attend pre-bid meetings and job walks; submit RFIs during the bid period.
  • Participate in value engineering and present cost-saving alternatives to general contractors and owners.
  • Hand off awarded projects with a complete turnover package: estimate, scope, quotes and assumptions.


    Records and improvement

  • Maintain bid logs and estimate files.
  • Compare estimates to job-cost results and refine labor units and pricing databases.

    Qualifications

    Required

  • 5+ years of electrical estimating experience with a commercial or industrial electrical contractor.
  • Proven record of winning and estimating projects above $5M, along with fast-turn small work.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret electrical, architectural, mechanical and civil drawings and specifications.
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local code requirements.
  • Solid understanding of electrical construction methods, materials, labor productivity and sequencing.
  • Proficiency with electrical estimating software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Clear written and verbal communication; able to present and defend bids.


    Preferred

  • Field experience as a journeyman or master electrician, or as an electrical project manager.
  • Background in healthcare, data center, education, industrial or mission-critical work.

    Skills and software

  • Estimating platforms such as Accubid.
  • Takeoff tools such as Bluebeam Revu.
  • Excel.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization and ability to manage several bids at once under deadlines.

    Work environment
This is primarily an office-based role with periodic job walks and site visits that may require PPE and walking active construction sites. Bid deadlines may occasionally require extended hours.
