Fire Protection Designer

The Fire Protection System Designer is responsible for creating fire protection shop drawings to be used in the installation of fire protection systems. The Designer is guided by sound principles of engineering, fire protection standards and codes. The designer’s work is guided and reviewed by his or her supervisor prior to review by customer and outside authorities of review, The Designer Level II may work independent with limited supervision on some or all of their work.

Job Responsibilities

The Designer is responsible for communicating the installation requirements of the project to the Project Manager or Senior Designer, fabrication and field crew teams. This work consists of creating shop drawings, hydraulic calculations, material lists, then distributing this information accurately and on schedule to others in the company. The designer’s work is guided by principles of engineering and relevant fire codes, these standards must be familiar to the designer. The designer may also place orders for material and assist in the coordination of work with other contractors. The designer may also communicate directly with the customer. The Designer level II may direct their own work, aide in setting schedules and have at least 2 years’ experience in creating fire protection shop drawings.

  • Advanced personal computer skills are required.
  • The ability to understand and use the basic principles of engineering and create clear and accurate shop drawings.
  • Follow directions and work with others.
  • NiCET level II or higher certification, or equivalent is required.
  • Regular and reliable attendance
  • Work in a team atmosphere to improve the outcome of projects.
  • Monitoring and controlling the ordering and fabrication of project materials.
  • Train new employees, or assist in new designer training and team member development.
  • Keep supervisor informed of known actions, written or verbal, which may affect the ability to successfully perform assignments or adversely affect Company operations.
  • Provide other support whether apparent, required or needed.
  • Complete additional projects as developed and assigned by your supervisor or management 

Job Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or equivalent from two-Year College or Technical School; two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • NICET, level 2, or 3. or equivalent is required
  • Applicable State license(s), if required to submit work for review
  • Auto-CAD, Auto-Sprink, or other equivalent software tools
  • Word, Excel and Email office skills are required.
  • General Math skills
  • NFPA – Fire Protection codes
  • Understanding of commonly used materials in fire protection
  • Willing to pass a post-offer drug test, background and reference check
