Reports to:  Plant Manager

Description:

Layouts, fits, and fabricates metal components to assemble structural forms, such as building and bridge parts, using knowledge of welding techniques, metallurgy, and engineering requirements.

Essential Functions:

• Lays out, positions, and secures parts and assemblies according to specifications, using straightedge, combination square, calipers, and ruler.
• Tack-welds or welds components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment.
• Observes tests on welded surfaces, such as ultrasonic, magnetic particle, and dimension tolerance to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications.
• Inspects grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using measuring instruments. Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
• Heats, forms, and dresses metal parts, using hand tools, torch, or arc welding equipment.  Ignites torch and adjusts valves, amperage, or voltage to obtain desired flame or arc.
• Analyzes engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.
• Develops templates and other work aids to hold and align parts.

Qualifications (Knowledge Requirements):

• Mechanical -- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
• Production and Processing -- Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.

Skill Requirements:

• Equipment Selection -- Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
• Quality Control Analysis -- Conducting tests and inspections of products to evaluate quality.
• Equipment Maintenance -- Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
• Repairing -- Repairing machines or systems using the needed tools.
• Operation and Control -- Controlling operations of equipment or systems.
• Mathematics -- Using mathematics to solve problems.

• Multi-limb Coordination -- The ability to coordinate two or more limbs (for example, two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting, standing, or lying It does not involve performing the activities while the whole body is in motion.
• Control Precision -- The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine to exact positions.
• Visualization -- The ability to imagine how something will look after it is moved around or when its parts are moved or rearranged.
