Job Description 

GEI Consultants is seeking a wetland ecologist in our Northwest Indiana office to conduct project work in the ecological consulting and restoration management fields.  This position requires experience with federal wetland delineation methodologies, familiarity with Midwest natural communities, identification of Midwest flora, and regulatory permit application preparation. Projects will involve field labor, technical work, report and permit application preparation, and/or supervision of field crews. This position will be stationed in our new location in Northwest Indiana, and will initially report to our Allendale, Michigan, Branch Manager.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties 

  • Assisting/conducting wetland delineations, vegetation monitoring, and protected species surveys
  • Collecting field data, analyzing data, and preparing technical reports
  • Using GPS to map natural resource features and boundaries
  • Interpreting aerial photography
  • Biologists may be required to spend 1-4 nights per week or more out of town working at remote locations
  • A typical work day consists of an 8-12 hour day, includes irregular hours (40-55 hours per week), and irregular starting and quitting times, in accordance with the requirements of the assigned job

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Five years of wetland or natural resource experience in the Midwest
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Life Sciences (Ecology, Environmental Science, Botany, Biology, Fisheries, Forestry) or equivalent experience
  • Experience with wetland delineation methodologies including soil characterization and identification of hydric soil field indicators
  • Experience identifying Midwest flora
  • Experience with vegetation monitoring and sampling methodologies
  • Experience with Indiana and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permitting and regulatory compliance
  • Experience with report preparation
