The high level:
The Development Associate is part of the region’s development team, working to support Reading Partners’ regional growth plan through fundraising and community engagement. The Development Associate's main roles are to support the achievement of regional fundraising goals through event support, and internal development operations. Reporting directly to the Development Manager, the Development Associate will support fundraising activities in foundations, events and operations in conjunction with development team. The Development Associate is a highly collaborative, goal-oriented, and driven relationship builder, who is excited by on-the-ground operational work.
What you’ll do:
Foundation Support
- Support in the writing and completion of reports to all foundation partners
- Support the renewal process of current foundation funders
- Support development staff to develop target lists of prospects, create customized service products develop solicitation materials
Revenue and Pipeline Management
- Manage all gift processing
External Relations & Communication
- Create and develop external communications including: social media content, committee emails, general email templates, newsletter content
- Support all event communications and follow up
Operations
- Ensure all internal systems are updated in a timely and efficient manner
- Lead on all logistics of AmeriCorps hiring with the support of the Program Director and Community Engagement Director
Fundraising Event (annual benefit)
- Support all logistics surrounding event execution - ticket sales, registration, auction
How you'll do it:
Development Operations Management
- Demonstrate a growing ability to conduct research, to prospect, and to drive ongoing development efforts in rapidly growing organizations particularly in New York.
- Lead on high volume of operational needs for the development team including grant writing, meeting brief creation, donor cultivation tracking, event planning, prospect research, and data aggregation.
- Demonstrate a strong detail orientation, a strong drive for accuracy, and ability to manage projects independently, and as part of a team. Execute all work in a highly organized, analytical, and data driven manner. Demonstrate the ability to prioritize, problem solve.
Relationship Development & Collaboration:
- Establish highly collaborative relationships with all team members in the region. Work closely with portfolio managers to ensure accurate, timely and compelling interactions with donors.
- Demonstrate a hunger to learn, grow, support, and add great value. Regularly seek to understand all aspects of our model to convey externally. Demonstrate excitement to steward and leverage relationships to support regional growth.
Communication:
- Effectively write high-quality donor communications that demonstrate deep knowledge of our program and promote our mission. Demonstrate the ability to write customized and compelling grant reports, proposals and letters of intent. Through exceptional writing, serve as an ambassador of Reading Partners.
- Quickly establish credibility when promoting Reading Partners to external audiences. Demonstrate a high degree of comfort and poise with donors, corporations, and prospects.
About you!
- You’ll be successful in this role if you:
- Have 3+ years of increasing responsibility in a development or related role
- Are an exceptional and persuasive communicator in writing and verbally
- Are achievement-oriented and have a demonstrated track record of achieving aggressive fundraising goals
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent experience
- Can prove eligibility to work in the U.S. legally
- Boast a deep belief in our mission

Bonus Points if you:
- Are an AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, or other national service alum/alumna
- Have experience working in launch or growth phases of organizations
- Have a high degree of comfort with Salesforce or other fundraising database
- Have experience working in education or literacy

- This is a part-time role that will end in June 2020. We are interested in candidates who can work a minimum of 20 hours a week or a maximum of 30 hours a week. The position is benefits eligible at 30 hours a week.

The other things you need to know:
- Travel: This position travels regularly throughout New York. This position may also involve occasional travel to Reading Partners’ National Headquarters in Oakland, CA.
- Typical Physical & Mental Demands: Requires prolonged sitting with some bending, stooping and stretching, and eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, telephone, photocopier, calculator and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to communicate with volunteers and staff. Also requires flexibility to readily adapt to a changing environment.
