GIS Summer Intern with City of Brandon
The City of Brandon, South Dakota seeks an individual for the position of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Summer Intern. The intern will work under the supervision of the City Engineer. Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver’s license, and have completed or be enrolled in a recognized curriculum at an institution of higher education in Geographical Information Systems or closely related program.
Applicants for this position should have the ability to perform the following tasks:
- Create maps and graphs, using ArcGIS software
- Operate and assist in the maintenance of GIS system hardware, software, plotter, and related equipment
- Understand and operate a Topcon GRS-1 handheld GP unit or similar to collect data and import the data into the GIS software
- Enter new map data using the principles of cartography including coordinate systems, longitude, latitude, elevation, topography, and map scales
- Analyze geographic relationship among varying types of data
- Read and interpret basic civil engineering and architectural drawing
- Be proficient with computer hardware and software including Microsoft Office, email, and internet browser program
- Work in outdoor summer conditions (collecting data for storm water, waste water, water supply, and street system), as well as in normal indoor office environment
- Work independently and accomplish assigned tasks with minimal supervision
This is temporary position, working 40 hours a week, beginning mid-to-late May, for approximately 16 weeks. Pay will be $12 to $14 per hour, depending on knowledge and experience.
