Job Description
GEI Consultants is seeking to fill a position for a biological technician in our Denver, Colorado office. This position will float between tasks related to biological monitoring, water quality, and support for our ecological laboratory. This position requires a basic working knowledge of aquatic biology, water chemistry, and laboratory analytical methods. Projects will involve field labor, overnight travel during field season, laboratory work related to benthic macroinvertebrates (taxonomic identifications and/or sample processing) and whole effluent toxicity (WET) testing. This position may require occasional weekend work. The ability to perform well in a team environment is essential.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
- As part of a team, perform standard sampling methods for biological parameters, especially fish and benthic macroinvertebrates
- As part of a team, perform standard sampling methods for water chemistry
- As part of a team, conduct aquatic community field surveys, which may include one or all of the following:

- Use of electrofishing equipment for fish population sampling
- Collection of benthic macroinvertebrate population samples
- Water quality monitoring/sampling
- Assistance with assessment of instream habitat
- Use of GPS technology for mapping of biological resources
- Ability to follow and implement established methods and protocol is critical
- Conduct Whole Effluent Toxicity (WET) testing
- Assist in maintaining the laboratory’s Ceriodaphnia dubia
- Conduct basic chemistry analysis
- Sorting and potentially identifying aquatic benthic invertebrates in support of specific project requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Life Sciences (Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Fisheries) - or equivalent experience
- Must hold a valid Driver's License
- Upon hiring, the selected candidate may be required to complete Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) training and uphold certifications
- Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for extended periods of time in a variety of weather conditions. May include hiking moderate distances to access site locations and lifting and carrying moderately heavy equipment. Travel may be extensive for some time periods during the year
Desired Qualifications
- Past experience conducting aquatic community field surveys
- Ability to perform gear and field-related maintenance tasks
- Past experience in WET and/or macroinvertebrate lab
- Experience performing GIS Analysis using ArcGIS/ArcMap 10.6
- Experience with Excel databases and formulas and willing to learn other graphing or analysis software
- Positive, flexible, team-oriented approach, with the willingness and desire to work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Ability to work well independently and with a diverse, multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment
