Job Description
GEI Consultants is seeking to fill an entry level biologist/environmental scientist position in our Denver, Colorado office. This position will primarily support our biological monitoring projects located at sites across the western U.S. This position requires an introductory level of skill and experience related to aquatic biology, water chemistry, and technical report writing. Projects will involve field labor, overnight travel during field season, technical desktop work, and may require occasional weekend work. The ability to perform well in a team environment is essential.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
- Perform standard sampling methods for biological parameters, especially fish and benthic macroinvertebrates
- Perform standard sampling methods for water chemistry
- Conduct aquatic community field surveys, which may include one or all of the following:

- Use of electrofishing equipment for fish population sampling
- Collection of benthic macroinvertebrate population samples
- Water quality monitoring/sampling
- Assessment of stream habitat and collection of flow data
- Utilize GPS technology for mapping of biological resources
- Conduct literature research, data entry, statistical data analysis, and perform tasks related to technical report writing
- Perform tasks with an excellent attention to detail, and overall ability to follow and implement established methods.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Life Sciences (Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Fisheries) - or equivalent experience
- Must hold a valid Driver's License
- Upon hiring, the selected candidate will be required to complete Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) training and uphold certifications
- Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for extended periods of time in a variety of weather conditions. May include hiking moderate distances to access site locations and lifting and carrying moderately heavy equipment
Desired Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Life Sciences (Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Fisheries)
- 1-2 years of experience working in the biological sciences
- Past experience surveying fish and macroinvertebrate populations in coldwater and warmwater streams. Ability to identify fish species
- Ability to perform gear and field-related maintenance tasks
- Experience performing GIS Analysis using ArcGIS/ArcMap 10.6
- Working knowledge of Clean Water Act regulatory framework
- Experience utilizing Excel databases and formulas, as well as other graphing and analytical software
- Positive, flexible, team-oriented approach, with the willingness and desire to work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team. We are seeking a motivated individual with good communication skills willing to learn and apply new field and technical skills
- Experience with technical writing
- Ability to work well independently and with a diverse, multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment
- Standard First Aid and CPR
