Join the team of Carolina Sunrock, a locally owned and operated construction materials company based in Raleigh, NC. We are privileged to have a rich compliment of dedicated employees. We currently have a need for a Geologist Intern to join our team working at the Corporate office in Raleigh, NC.

The Geologist Intern will provide multi-media geologic support to the Engineering Department and the Intern will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Mapping and detailed volume analysis of the mining and aggregate byproducts.
  • Assist in monitoring quarry daily production and its processing facilities to determine material volumes and aggregate byproduct volumes depended on facility setups.  
  • Coordination with both internal and external geologic laboratories for sample analysis, including but not limited to, chemical analysis, point counts, particle size analysis, density index, moisture content, indirect tensile strength, unconfined compressive strength, Poisson's ratio, and static modulus of elasticity.
  • Geologic sampling of the byproduct streams within each quarry facility.
  • Assist in interpretation of sample results.
  • Determine potentially viable product options and selections.
  • Assist with coordination between the engineering department and quarry operations to determine suitable and sustainable plans to ensure quality control.
  • Assist with engineering, operations, and sales to aid in marketing optionality of byproducts.      

The incumbent will work under general supervision where routine duties are performed with minimal supervision. We’re looking for a true self-starter who is comfortable in a cross-functional environment of working autonomously and with a team. The summer internship position will last approximately 10-13 weeks. 

Required Skills:

  • Individual must have obtained or pursuing a Bachelors or Master’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geology, and/or Soil Science
  • Ability to drive or commute to various locations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Current driver's license

The physical demands described hereafter are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions for the position. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 80 pounds from time to time.  Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, work with the fingers, and perceive attributes of objects and materials.  The position requires clear vision at 20 feet or more and the ability to identify and distinguish colors.  The position requires frequent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling.
