Position Summary
OL&B Railway is looking for a highly motivated individual who supports all activity involved in inspecting, and repairing freight railcars, transloading, track maintenance and switching by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Abide by Company Safety Program and Policies, while performing duties safely.
25% welding, 25% equipment, 40% mechanical, 10% other duties as assigned
Provide railcar repair and other railroad support services as needed and to be knowledgeable and abide by all Company Rules, Safety Programs and Policies. Abide by all FRA, AAR, OSHA, and other applicable regulations.
Perform railcar inspections and repairs to FRA & AAR guidelines and customer requirements that include but is not limited to: Railcar body defects, safety appliances including hand holds, sill steps, grab iron, brake platforms, running boards, air brake system, outlet gates, hatch covers, trucks, and wheels. Read and follow repair sheets and work scopes.
Operate acetylene torches for cutting and welders for welding on mild steel, cast iron, and stainless steel. Must be able to become certified in welding steel.
Accurately complete all necessary repair documentation and inventory documentation.
Other duties will include:
Assisting in unloading and loading railcars and trucks using forklifts, conveyors, and all other equipment and completing all necessary documentation.
Performing track maintenance following Track Worker Safety Program while working around and using maintenance of way tools and equipment.
Maintaining rail yard including, vegetation, roadway maintenance, drainage, snow removal, and other duties, to ensure a safe working environment.
Assist in maintenance of facilities and all associated equipment, including, but not limited to, the overhead crane, forklift, skid loader, excavator, air compressor, company pickups and trucks. Equipment must be inspected and kept in sound and safe operating condition.
Follow safety policies and procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment required for the job in a safe manner.
Provide switching & other railroad support services as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements and Education:
- Requires a vocational/technical diploma; or three to six month’s related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Must be capable of learning AAR car repair regulations and compliance of car shop tools, gauges and equipment.
- Must be able to become AWS-certified welder rated in, at least, flat and vertical weld.
- Individual must be capable of receiving certification in Mig and Arc welding, lifts, overhead crane, CPR, first aid, and forklift operations within 90 to 180 days of employment.
- Will be required to go through a welding proficiency test as part of the interview process.
- Must have a valid Nebraska driver's license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to climb or balance and work from raised work platform at heights up to 50'.
The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers, to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; must have good hand-eye coordination, and manual dexterity.
Must wear personal protective equipment--hard hat, steel toed shoes, gloves, eye protection, etc.
The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; working with hand and power tools, work with extreme heat and vibration.
The employee also works outside with year-round weather conditions.
The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and fumes airborne particles. Normal hours are Monday thru Friday, 7 am to 3 pm.
The position may require extended work hours to meet production needs, which may include nights and weekends. There will be the occasional shift of up to 12 hours. There will also be the occasional weekend shift and the occasional 2-hour on-call. Carman are Hours of Service positions. Shifts cannot exceed 12 hours on duty and will have a minimum of 10 hours of off duty time prior to starting a new shift. Maximum days worked cannot exceed 6 consecutive days. If 6 consecutive days are worked, there will be a minimum of 48 hours of off duty before starting next shift.
This position is eligible for the Railroad Retirement Program benefit.
