Job Summary

The Wheelman is responsible for the safe operation of the vessel and/or barge(s) and this responsibility includes: compliance with the Certificate of Inspection (COI), applicable regulations and the safety management system(SMS); reporting of non-conformities to shore based management and supervision of all persons onboard in carrying out their assigned duties. The Wheelman must also ensure that company policy, rules, and regulations are followed.

Management Responsibilities

• Give direction to the vessel crew
• Assist Captain overseeing all work projects of vessel/barge(s)
• Ensure he/she and crew are courteous to all people at fleets, docks and alongside customer’s equipment

Required Education  / Certifications

• High School Graduate/GED minimum
• Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential Master of Towing vessels upon inland and western rivers
• Valid medical certificate
• Tankerman-PIC of DL cargoes
• Valid Driver License
• Valid TWIC

Primary Responsibilities & Scope

• Safely operate AMS vessels, following all applicable federal, state, local and company policies
• Advise the office of anticipated crew shortages
• Report incidents, accidents, injuries, illnesses to AMS management
• Ensure AMS equipment is always ready to service customer needs
• Assist the vessel Captain as needed with budgetary and crew management

Required Experience

• Experience: Minimum of 5 years experience pushing red flag cargoes. Experience tankering barges with DL cargoes. Posted in Texas Gulf Coast inland region including the following ports: Houston, Galveston, Texas City, Port Arthur and Corpus Christi.

• Required License and Endorsements: Master of Towing upon inland waters and western rivers with no citations within the past year. Current medical certificate. Tankerman-PIC of DL cargoes with no spills or citations within the past year. Current Radar license.  

• Computer Skills: Proficient with MS Word, Excel and email. Helm. Rosepoint or other electronic navigational software.
• Communication Skills: Must be able to communicate clearly and understandably both verbally and in writing
• Have Reliable Transportation to and from job sites
