An Instructor joining the Central Ohio Lineworker Training (COLT) program will be an integral part of providing elite hands-on apprentice and journeyman training to lineworkers. This position is located outside of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, adjacent to Consolidated Cooperative’s headquarters.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

Work with COLT Lead Instructor/Coordinator to:

• Provide direct instruction of courses as identified in the COLT apprentice program, while preparing the classroom and organizing all field stations.
• Coordinate, schedule, and organize all apprentice training activities, workshop activities, and other educational opportunities offered through COLT.
• Maintain a positive working relationship with the safety curriculum subcommittee.
• Develop new apprentice courses, educational opportunities, and workshops, as necessary.
• Support the continuous enhancement of existing course content, curriculum, delivery, and instructional methodologies based upon trends, best practices, assessment data, and committee / subcommittee recommendations.
• Provide written and verbal reports concerning apprentice and journeyman training as needed.
• Schedule courses, and maintain all records in conjunction with apprenticeship guidelines.
• Communicate with cooperative and other electric utility personnel as to assignments, evaluations, grades, fees, student records, etc., in a timely manner.
• Identify, assign, and manage part-time training specialists to assist with courses as needed.
• Coordinate and facilitate onsite coaching sessions for workforce development at OREC member sites.
• Coordinate and facilitate pre-hire and post-hire assessments for OREC member systems.
• Maintain working relationships with utilities, manufacturers’ representatives, and vendors.
• Purchase all supplies and tools necessary; ensure the availability of all trucks and other equipment necessary for instruction.
• Assist with fees schedules and invoicing for apprentice and journeyman courses.
• Facilitate and schedule building, equipment, and vehicle inspection, maintenance, and repair.
• Perform all duties of a Safety Training and Loss Prevention Instructor as needed (see job description).
• Perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High school diploma required. Associates Degree in electrical engineering, safety, or other related field preferred. Must possess or obtain instructor certification in Medic First Aid (EMP). Technical courses beyond high school preferred in basic electricity, shop, mathematics, English and public speaking. Exceptional experience over and above experience described below may be substituted for part of the educational requirement. Have or obtain (within 5 years) a CLCP Certification or equivalent.

Experience: Must have a minimum of ten (10) years of diversified line experience in electric utility line construction, maintenance, and troubleshooting including overhead and underground distribution URD. Should have at least one year of experience in substations and transmission lines and administrative experience, including budget development, program planning and supervision. Prior classroom or training experience preferred. Extraordinary leadership skills and instructional talent may be substituted for part of the experience requirement.

Knowledge: Must have working knowledge of OSHA regulations, NESC, DOT and RUS rules and regulations. Must have superior oral and written communication skills. Must be highly organized. The successful candidate for this position must be comfortable networking with individuals and groups. Class A CDL certification preferred. CPR certification preferred.

ESSENTIAL ABILITIES & SKILLS:

• Ability to communicate effectively in public (i.e. with large groups or with small dedicated groups of professionals).
• Ability to research, teach and lead discussions in a classroom setting.
• Master knowledge of the technical and operating features of electric apparatus and construction equipment and have the ability to demonstrate procedures and the operation of electrical apparatus and equipment to employees.
• Ability to clearly and concisely compose training procedures, memoranda and letters, complete paperwork and record information for reports and inspections expediently and legibly.
• Basic computer skills and a working knowledge of or ability to learn Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
• Ability to climb wooden poles and perform other physical tasks common to electrical linework.
• Work unselfishly with others as a solid member of an effective team.

Working Conditions: Work associated with this position is mostly indoors in a typical classroom/office setting in the winter months, but must be able to direct instruction and travel involving outside exposure at all times of the year. Must be able to occasionally lift and carry 50lbs. Should be able to proficiently climb wooden poles. Must be able to physically carry out all essential job duties. Must be knowledgeable of appropriate safety procedures and model appropriate safety behaviors at all time.
