SiREM, a division of Geosyntec Consultants International Inc. serving the international environmental site remediation industry, is seeking an outstanding candidate for a Senior Environmental Laboratory Technician position in Guelph, Ontario, to support our remediation treatability testing services and general laboratory duties. The successful applicant is an organized self-starter able to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with an interest in environmental issues and practical hands-on experience. This position is full time, commencing as soon as possible.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Set up and support of bench-scale laboratory treatability studies.
  • Chemical analyses (pH, ORP, gas and ion chromatography, titrations, etc.).
  • Data analysis and entry using Excel including generating tables and figures for reports.
  • Deliver regular data updates to our clients.
  • Prepare reports detailing the material and methods and assisting with results interpretation.
  • Operation, maintenance and trouble-shoot laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Mentor and train Laboratory Assistants and/or Technicians as needed.
  • General laboratory tasks including: sample reception, inventory and receiving supplies, preparation of chemical solutions, housekeeping.

  • Training: This position required WHIMIS training and laboratory health and safety training, and may require OSHA hazardous communication, first aid, or CPR training and medical monitoring, paid for by the firm. We also offer professional and technical development opportunities including in-house seminars, webinars, and mentoring, that allow our staff to build the technical and business skills necessary to become successful laboratory technicians.
  • Work Environment: While performing the duties of the job, the individual will work in the laboratory; the individual will be trained to work with fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals under safe controlled conditions wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (e.g., laboratory coats, safety glasses, gloves) and engineering controls (e.g., fume hoods, elephant trunks).  The individual is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the environment is moderate.
  • Some fieldwork and overnight travel may be required from time to time.

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE 

  • Associate's degree (U.S.) or College diploma (Canada) in environmental science, biotechnology or related field. (required)

 SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS 

  • At least 4 years of hands on laboratory experience, ideally including gas and ion chromatography, wet chemistry and microbiology; or equivalent combination of education and experience. (required)
  • Familiarity with fundamental concepts in environmental science, microbiology and chemistry. (required)
  • Ability to monitor several different types of studies and laboratory activities simultaneously. (preferred)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, be self-motivated and possess a strong work ethic. (required)
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. (required)
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. (required)
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 49 pounds unaided and 50-100 pounds with assistance and/or proper engineering controls. (required)
  • Ability to regularly use hands to grip, grasp, finger, handle, or feel; and to sit, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. (required)
  • Valid Canadian driver’s license, reliable transportation, and satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)
