Position Summary

Structural Ironworkers raise, place, and unite iron or steel girders, columns, and other structural members to form completed structures or structural framework. This position is deemed ‘safety sensitive’ due to the fact that a person improperly performing the essential or marginal functions of the job would constitute a threat to the health or safety of the employee, the employee’s co-workers, and/or the public at large.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Read specifications and blueprints to determine the locations, quantities, and sizes of materials required.
  • Connect columns, beams, and girders with bolts, following blueprints and instructions from supervisors.
  • Hoist steel beams, girders, and columns into place, using cranes, or signal hoisting equipment operators to lift and position structural members.
  • Bolt aligned structural steel members in position for permanent riveting, bolting, or welding into place.
  • Guide girders or other structural steel members to position them into place.
  • Cut, bend, and weld steel pieces, using metal shears, torches and welding equipment.
  • Fasten structural steel members to hoist cables, using chains, cables, or rope.
  • Force structural steel members into final positions, using turnbuckles, crowbars, jacks, and hand tools.
  • Dismantle and assemble structures and equipment.
  • Comply with all company safety and QA/QC program and OSHA regulations.
  • The ability to work overtime and regular, punctual attendance is required.

Qualifications

Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Structural Steel Ironworker is required. Must have all required hand tools. Must be able to read and understand structural drawings as well as company policies.  Welding certification papers preferred.

Physical Demands

Must be able to lift in excess of 100 pounds often on the job and climb in excess of 300 feet. Must be able to pull own weight when climbing steel bracing or ladders. Frequent amounts of bending, stooping, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling. Must be able to tolerate temperature fluctuations, loud noises, a dusty environment, and be around high voltage electromagnetic fields. All of the physical demands listed are essential functions.
