Senior Payroll Manager

This position will be accountable for leading a team that processes multi-state payrolls for both union and non-union employees, ensuring timely and proper payment, including handling garnishments, benefits and leave calculations, taxes and deductions, and all activities to maintain compliance with federal, state and local labor laws

  • Manage all payroll functions, reporting and compliance.
  • Identifies and recommends updates to payroll processing software, systems, and procedures in attainment of best practices
  • Maintains staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees
  • Ensures communication with internal and external contacts (including senior leadership levels) as necessary to ensure expectations and timelines are met
  • Maintains current knowledge and understanding of regulations, industry trends, current practices, new developments, and applicable laws
  • Audit the work of payroll field focused employees.
  • Lead a team of payroll specialists supporting them with subject matter expert advice.
  • Oversee payroll employee set-up, processing, and transmission.
  • Advise management and payroll team on existing and pending employment tax requirements.
  • Research, audit, and resolve tax related client payroll issues, ensuring full compliance with federal and state regulations in relation to employment taxes.
  • Lead and assess creation, quality assurance, and reconciliation of tax files, reports and related tax transactions and government reports and files.
  • Adhere to the highest degree of professional standards and strict confidentiality in matters that require discretion.
  • Develop and manage processes, procedures and controls necessary for a Sarbanes Oxley, Section 404 compliant environment   
  • Develop training materials and provide training to the team and customers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What is Required? 

  • Bachelor’s in Finance or Accounting with 5+ years of progressively responsible financial/management experience.
  • Previous experience with payroll management.
  • Solid academic credentials, preferred CPP.
  • Construction or manufacturing industry background within a large public company.
  • Comprehensive operational and technical expertise in federal and state employment taxation. Technical expertise and proficiency with relevant federal and state statute and regulations is required. 
  • Experience regarding business accounting, payment and reporting required by federal, state, multi-state and local employment tax regulations and operations.
  • Strong leadership skills – a good communicator and an active listener with a commanding interpersonal presence – tempered by a strong affinity for team play.
  • Strong written communication and customer service orientation
  • Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and committed to following through on projects
  • Good problem-solving skills including trouble shooting and resolving issues with processes, reports etc.
  • Practiced in discretion, with experience handling confidential matters.
  • Strong PC skills including Excel.
