EHS Specialist/Engineer/Manager 

Operational since 2001, Dakota Ethanol in Wentworth, SD produces more than 90 million gallons of ethanol annually. The company also produces distillers grains and non-food grade corn oil, providing a feed source for local livestock producers or the biodiesel industry. Dakota Ethanol is owned and operated by Lake Area Corn Processors, LLC, which is comprised of more than 1,000 members, the majority of whom are South Dakota farmers. The EHS Specialist/Engineer/Manager is responsible for the creation, development and maintenance of the environmental, health and safety management systems for the ethanol manufacturing facility of Dakota Ethanol, LLC. The EHS Specialist/Engineer/Manager is a FT, salary position, typically 8am-5pm M-F, who will lead and direct EHS audits and inspections, behavioral observations, incident investigations, and will ensure corrective actions are implemented when needed. The EH&S will lead continuous improvements efforts to achieve zero safety and environmental incidents promoting world class EHS excellence.

Health and Safety

  • Provide training, monitor for effectiveness, make revisions and distribute monthly safety training, inspections and reports. Maintain safety training records and ensure completion.
  • Review current and new safety-related regulations, safety equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Evaluate PPE usage for job specific tasks and implement standardized work instructions.
  • Lead and direct safety audits throughout the facility.
  • Lead MOC review for new and modified operations and/or equipment for EHS compliance
  • Provide a comprehensive safety orientation for new employees and contractors
  • Maintain working relationships with First Response agencies and assist with exercises.
  • Maintain and lead improvements to enhance safety performance for required elements of the PSM and site-specific safety programs.
  • Lead Root Cause and Problem Elimination activities with regards to safety and near miss incidents.
  • Generate, review, and submit all safety reporting such as OSHA 300.
  • Schedule, coordinate and participate in safety committee meetings promoting a world class safety culture.
  • Monitor, review, and update all safety permits as needed.
  • Review and maintain plant Emergency Action Plan
  • Strong understanding of ANSI and OSHA standards.

Environmental

  • Oversee environmental compliance, including the facility’s environmental permits, hazardous waste management, SWPPP, SPCC, LDAR and other environmental programs applicable to state and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Collect and validate data for required reporting.
  • Lead and direct plant inspections, environmental reviews and other activities as needed throughout the facility; track and document completion of corrective actions.
  • Provide correspondence with regulatory agencies as needed.
  • Manage the safety and environmental equipment inventory (i.e. PPE, emergency response equipment, etc.)
  • Lead environmental sustainability efforts in a manner that promotes continuous improvement in reduction of the Company environmental footprint

What you need to have!

      • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Science, or Engineering; emphasis on Safety and Environmental Management or equivalent
      • 3-7 years of Environmental, Health and Safety experience in an industrial manufacturing facility desired
      • Experience developing, implementing and managing sustainable strategies and programs in a wide spectrum of safety, health, and environmental topics
      • A thorough knowledge of government, safety and environmental regulations.
      • Ability to lead, motivate and influence with and without direct authority.
      • Commitment to and passion for safety able to identify and execute on safety improvement opportunities.
      • A people-oriented leader who will regularly interact with personnel at all organizational levels expressing a high degree of motivation.
      • Desire to continue to develop knowledge and skills.
      • Strong desire for continuous improvement
      • Experience with RCPE or RCCA problem solving approach
      • Project management and organizational skills.

Time will be spent in a temperature-controlled office-based environment at the manufacturing facility.  Ability to sit for long periods of time.  Able to view computer screen for lengths at a time.  Time will be spent in the plant.  All types of chemical industry equipment are used in the plant to include, but not limited to fermentation vessels, jet cookers, agitators, mixing and milling equipment, distillation columns, centrifuges and distributive control systems.  May be exposed to loud noises, wet and humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic chemicals, extreme hot and cold depending on weather conditions.  Must be able to speak and listen clearly. Fine visual acuity to read for accuracy. May be required to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs occasionally.  Ability to work from elevated surfaces. Regularly exposed to dust, odors, fumes, noise, and temperature variations.
