Primary Function of Backhoe Operator:

The responsibilities of the Backhoe Operator include, but are not limited to:

 

Equipment Operation/General

  • Operate the Backhoe/Excavator and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment.
  • Conduct pre-operational checks on equipment, and clean, lubricate and refill equipment as necessary.
  • Understand and follow directions from supervisors as to required work area.
  • Operate Backhoe controls for opening and closing the bucket, raising and lowering the boom, and digging, lifting and dumping dirt. Additionally, the operator must understand how to drive the backhoe both forward and backward and how to use the stabilizers to prevent machine movement while digging..
  • Ensure a sound understanding of the issues involving ground disturbance.
  • Operate Backhoe on public or private roadways, maintaining proper awareness of ones surroundings.
  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance to ensure smooth operation of the Backhoe.
  • Operate other heavy equipment and other construction related duties as required.
  • Must ensure a solid understanding of, and comply with the principles of the company’s general procedures.

 

Equipment Operation/Pipe

  • Work with ground personnel in the excavation and installation process of laying pipe on line and grade.
  • Ensure trench is excavated to the proper depth/grade.
  • Responsible for placement of water, storm and sanitary sewer pipe in the excavation.
  • Follow directions of ground crew regarding craning, gravel placement and grading.
  • Cut grade with minimal time spent on excavating to ensure production is on schedule.
  • Conduct trench work, which meets OH&S requirements.
  • Operate Excavator/Hoe on public roadways, maintaining proper awareness of ones surroundings.
  • Ensure a sound understanding of the issues involving ground disturbance.
  • Be aware of proper rigging of pipe, manhole barrels, etc. and ensure safe work procedures are followed during the lowering of materials into the excavation

 

Safety

  • Promote, execute and adhere to the company’s safety program, and encourage all employees, subcontractors and consultants to adopt safety as a culture.
  • Attend daily and weekly safety meetings and inspections.
  • Work with Safety Department to investigate damage, incidents or near misses in the worksite, and ensure proper procedures are carried out according to the Company’s Safety Program.
  • Work in a safe, responsible manner to not intentionally or unintentionally injure oneself, or endanger the wellbeing of others.

 Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience:

  • Must observe safety procedures and report any potentially unsafe conditions to management.
  • Knowledge of road construction equipment.
  • Knowledge of road construction materials and road construction processes.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Must follow policies and procedures and support UIG’s Mission.

REQUIREMENTS:  ALL Applicants must be:

  • 18 years of Age
  • Heavy Equipment Operator certificate or credential, preferred.
  • Able to pass a Drug Test
  • Legally Eligible to Work in the US
  • Additional Requirements for Grader Operators/Craft Workers:
    • Must have own transportation to and from jobsite every work day (driver's license required).
    • Must provide own hand tools (excluding power tools), if applicable.
    • May be expected to travel where the project requires (multi-state opportunities).
    • Must be able to physically and repetitively lift and carry at least 50 pounds on a routine basis.
