Job Summary
Responsible for all accounting activities, including components of financial statements, financial forecasting, audits, internal controls and valuation of hedging/trading portfolio. This position will be required to manage specialized work efficiently, with confidence and competence. Above average attention to details, concern for exact correctness of work, and a strong commitment to tasks completed on time, is a must for this role. This position is located at our Houston, Texas office.
Required Education / Certifications
- Bachelors Degree in Accounting or related field
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential is preferred
- MBA is preferred
Primary Responsibilities and Scope
- General finance/accounting functions
- Prepare financial statements and analysis of financial results
- Review general ledger accounts for integrity; including account analyses and reconciliations to ensure financial statements are in compliance with GAAP
- Prepare forecasts and forecast-to-actual variance analyses
- Review, oversee and analyze daily financial activity for various areas in the Commercial business unit
- Provide guidance and support on new transaction types and how they should be reported
- Develop sensitivity analysis models and performance reports to understand the profit potential of the existing business
- Develop and streamline the reporting of derivative positions for risk assessment and financial statement purposes
- Maintains current knowledge on relevant GAAP principles with a focus on the petroleum industry
- Ensure accounting systems and procedures are in compliance with company policies and acceptable accounting practices
- Document and test control activities for revenue recognition, financial statements closing process, derivative trading, customer fixed price contract hedging, inventory hedging and other
- Interact with internal and external auditors
- General business
- Provide advice to senior leadership on financial, operational and strategic business matters
- Evaluate sales contracts against current market conditions tracking results and documenting results
- Support contract negotiation process and mitigate risks
- Communicate with various stakeholders to resolve discrepancies when performing trade checks
- Provide separate “set of eyes” in the Houston office independent of the front office
- Respond to ad-hoc queries from the Commercial Supply and Trading team and executive management
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Secondary cost reconciliation
- Billing and confirmation for invoicing
- Internal controls
- Maintaining, implementing, enforcing and improving internal controls and associated documentation
- Maintain internal controls for hedging frameworks and develop tools and processes to better manage risk exposure
- Hedging / accounting for derivatives
- Track and review daily valuation/mark-to-market of hedging/trading commodities portfolio
- Assist with monitoring and analysis of market conditions, regulatory changes, and financial instruments to help support hedging strategy
- Reconcile internal records of derivatives trading activity with broker statements; compute and reconcile daily P&L with broker statements; reconcile physical inventories; research and rectify discrepancies
- Assess risk associated with any un-hedged (outright or basis) positions
- Monitor and assess performance and risk associated with customer fixed price contracts and associated hedge positions
- Analyze and verify trader deals and calculate position worth
- Monitor transaction activity to ensure desired hedging strategies are independently evaluated
- Assist in the process for gaining approval from senior management for hedging strategies
- Provide periodic (monthly) price testing for product curves (current and forward price mark verification)
- Process improvement
- Develop process improvements giving consideration to effectiveness of internal controls and time efficiencies
Required Experience
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in progressive accounting positions
- Minimum two (2) years of experience as a Controller is preferred
- Previous “Big Four” public accounting experience is preferred
- Experience using ERP or accounting software (Ascend is preferred)
- 3 to 5 years of experience using SRA (Solarc Right Angle) software
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook)
- Knowledgeable of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures within Accounting & Finance
- Direct experience in the petroleum industry and/or trading operation (commodities)
- Risk (oil trading) proficiency; 2 to 3 years of experience in risk evaluation.
- Experience with Sarbanes Oxley is preferred
- Strong personality able to work with the Houston team while recognizing the control role and independent responsibilities within the Atlas financial organization
