The City of Brandon is seeking applicants to fill a vacancy and to establish an eligibility list of qualified applicants for the position of Police Officer with the Brandon Police Department (BPD). Once established, this list will be used as a resource for filling open positions within a 12-month period of time following certification of the list.
As an officer within the BPD, you will perform general functions related to the protection of life and property, promote public safety, assist the general public, and respond to emergency situations as they occur. Police Officers report directly to a Police Lieutenant, a Sergeant, and/or the Chief of Police.
The following are the anticipated time frames for this process:
- This posting for new applications closes at midnight on 5/12/2021
- Written testing will be scheduled in early mid to late May
- Interviews with qualified candidates will begin in early June
Essential functions include:
- Handling emergency situations and calls for assistance: respond in a prompt and safe manner to emergency and non-emergency situations; control the scene as needed; administer first aid or other assistance as needed; provide ambulance assistance if necessary; provide assistance to citizens as able; respond to complaints by the public
- Conduct investigations: conduct accident investigations; compile information; prepare and complete reports; conduct other investigations as directed, including gathering and preserving evidence, obtaining statements, and making arrests
- Promote public safety: patrol designated areas; control traffic as needed; prepare citations as required; ensure that laws and ordinances are appropriately enforced; conduct public education programs as assigned; serve criminal process, including warrants and subpoenas; testify in court as a witness
- Miscellaneous - prepare documentation and reports as required; attend seminars, meetings, and training to learn current and proper techniques; properly care for and maintain department issued equipment, including vehicles, uniforms, weapons, and training manuals; maintain confidentiality consistent with police department best practices
Qualifications and requirements include:
Education and Work Experience:
- high school diploma or GED required
- associate degree or higher preferred
- previous law enforcement experience preferred
- certified under the South Dakota Law Enforcement Standards and Training Act, or eligible to be certified within first year of employment
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- effective verbal and written communication skills
- able to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
- able to develop skills with firearms, first aid, emergency vehicle operations, other police-related activities
- able to rapidly acquire working knowledge of approved principles, practices, procedures of police work
- able to develop professional relationships with supervisors, co-workers and general public
- able to deal with individuals in stressful conditions, including physical violence
- able to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations
- have technical abilities to operate phones, radios, computers and field equipment
- able to quickly learn state laws and City ordinances
- able to quickly learn locations, streets, landmarks and routes within the City
Physical Capabilities:
- must maintain physical conditioning at a level where officer is able to perform the essential functions of the position and operate job-related equipment at a high level, including, but not limited to patrol vehicles, lethal and nonlethal weapons, radios, handcuffs, fire extinguishers, first aid kits and crime scene kits
- must be able to meet all of the physical demands required of a police officer, including driving, walking, running, chasing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, bending, balancing, climbing, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, holding, keyboarding, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing
Additional Requirements:
- must be 21 years of age or older
- must have a valid driver’s license and safe driving record
- must maintain safe driving record; subject to pre-employment, random, post-accident and for-cause drug testing; pre-employment screening may also include comprehensive background check, psychological assessment, criminal history, driving record and physical
- able to work any hour of the day, any day of the week, and on any recognized holiday
