SiREM, an operating division of Geosyntec Consultants, is seeking a Photonics Project Professional to join our team in Knoxville, Tennessee. The position will support the Photonics Laboratory Manager with ongoing project and product development, business development, project management and general customer service duties. The successful applicant is an organized self-starter able to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with an interest in physical chemistry, spectroscopy, instrumentation, environmental issues, and practical hands-on experience. This position is full time, commencing as soon as possible.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Support ongoing Photonics projects, product development, sample testing, instrument installation, validation, data management and integrations as needed.
  • Perform fabrication and calibration of spectrometers.
  • Support Photonics business development initiatives and customer service with client outreach, conference presentations, webinars, and technical support as required.
  • Manage supplies and logistics of SiREM Photonics equipment.
  • Provide project management support for Photonics clients, ensuring project milestones are met and invoiced in a timely manner.
  • Perform financial analysis, projections, and pipeline management for the Photonics service area.
  • Mentor and train Laboratory Assistants and/or Technicians as needed.

  • Training: This position required WHIMIS training and laboratory specific health and safety training, and may require OSHA hazardous site training, first aid, or CPR training and medical monitoring, paid for by the firm. We also offer professional and technical development opportunities including in-house seminars, webinars, and mentoring, that allow our staff to build the technical and business skills necessary to become successful professionals.
  • Work Environment: While performing the duties of the job, the individual will work in the laboratory and at client sites; the individual will be trained to work with fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals under safe controlled conditions wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (e.g., laboratory coats, safety glasses, gloves) and engineering controls (e.g., glove boxes, fume hoods, directed ventilation).  The individual is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the environment is moderate. SiREM’s Knoxville facility is additionally designated as a Biosafety Level II Laboratory. Although this position does not involve direct work with Biosafety Level II microorganisms, the individual will work in a facility that may contain those microorganisms. The individual will be trained to work safely in a Biosafety Level II laboratory.

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physical Sciences (chemistry, physics, engineering) with a focus on Optical Spectroscopy, Analytical Chemistry, and Instrumentation Development. (required)
  • Advanced degree (M.S., or Ph.D.) in Physical Sciences (chemistry, physics, engineering) with a focus on Optical Spectroscopy, Analytical Chemistry, and Instrumentation Development. (preferred)

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS 

  • At least 5 (7+ preferred) years of hands-on laboratory or industrial experience, ideally including UV, FTIR, and optical spectroscopy; photonics instrumentation; chemistry; or equivalent combination of education and experience. May include experience from academic settings. (required).
  • Familiarity with fundamental concepts in physical chemistry, analytical chemistry and environmental science. (required).
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, be self-motivated and possess a strong work ethic. (required).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. (required).
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. (required).
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 49 pounds unaided and 50-100 pounds with assistance and/or proper engineering controls. (required).
  • Ability to regularly use hands to grip, grasp, finger, handle, or feel; and to sit, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. (required).
  • A basic understanding of business practices such as proposal preparation, contracting and business risk management, cost estimation, invoicing, procurement, and cash flow management. (preferred).
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license, reliable transportation, and satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required).
