The Traveling Foreman will be required to drive to job locations out of state and acts as the top supervisory position for Berg managing a single job site and day to day responsibility for the commercial construction operations (Drywall, Paint, Plaster) performed by The Berg Group.  Leads a team of carpenters, painters, plasterers, and all other field laborers to safely construct and exceed production goals set by the project team.  All Traveling Foreman will receive per diem for traveling.

The Traveling Foreman is key in bridging communications between the General Superintendent, Project Manager and Field Labor as well as maintaining the onsite relationship with the General Contractor.  As a Foreman, you are responsible to ensure all projects are on track to meet productions as well as overall project schedule.  

Safety, Production, Quality, and Craftsmanship are top priorities for the Foreman as they deliver on core services and set The Berg Group up to continue the relationship with the client onto the next job site. 

Essential Functions

Preconstruction

  • Attend and act as an active participant in pre-construction meetings with the General Sup, Safety Manager and Project Team.
  • Create a list of RFI’s and constructability questions if present.   
  • Identify risks (i.e. the need for lifts, tying off), accessibility, and opportunities to pick up the scope on projects prior to mobilization.
  • Meet with the with GC Foreman and other trades 1-2 times prior to the start of the project to develop needs, expectations and a strong team relationship to ensure project schedule and production goals are met.
  • Create a stocking and inventory plan; become familiar with the materials needed, gauge a starting point and when materials will be needed.

Production/Execution

  • Manage a field team to hold them accountable and review work in progress on the job site to ensure it meets The Berg Group’s Quality Control and Quality Assurance standards.
  • Maintain a presence and be hands-on performing work and training your team 15-80% of the work week (depending on staffing).
  • Alert the Project Manager regarding any opportunity to get paid for additional work performed (out of scope, go back, trade damage, etc).
  • Proactively work with the GC regarding changes in scope and T&M tickets so they are aware in real time.
  • Openly communicate with the Project Manager regarding any bid production discrepancies and work with the Project Manager to process change orders to make sure everything is covered.
  • Establish a great relationship with the client by maintaining composure/ temperament and reprioritizing as needed to meet client requests. Communicate the ‘why’ if a request cannot be met.    
  • Regularly and accurately keep project team(s) informed as to productions and other known and relevant field conditions so that they can best manage client relationships.
  • Work with the Safety Manager in reviewing the site-specific safety plan/questions and collaborate when there is a work related injury or emergency.
  • Complete (or identify an individual) daily safety walks and scaffold cheks.
  • Accurately inform Project Manager daily as it relates to job tracking by recording in Plexxis/foreman app. Work to resolve missed productions, overproductions and other discrepancies.
  • Participate in audits performed regularly in coordination with Safety teams onsite visits and owns follows up.
  • Maintains robust technology knowledge in Plexxis foreman app, BirdDogHR and other tools pushed by Berg to connect field and project management.

Field Labor Management

  • Single-site responsibility and oversight of commercial construction operations.
  • Manage a Field Labor team of 2-70 employees.
  • Successfully onboard new employees (process I9 accurately per federal law); follow Bergs outlined training procedures as it relates to Safety and other job related information.
  • Build a relationship with new employees and seek to understand skill set, level and strengths to empower them to perform quality work.
  • Have open communication with the Field Coordinator regarding the need of workers, any employee relations, and/or performance issues.
  • Offboard voluntary and involuntary terminated employees, submit termination form within 12 hours of term conversation.
  • Plan and prepare work following foreman walkthrough and delegate the Field Laborers when they arrive on site daily.
  • Maintain open communication with employees and touch base with them 3-10 times a day.
  • Provide work direction, coaching and performance feedback.  
  • Pinpoint top performers (attitude, quality, speed, and willingness to learn) within the field team and ensure they have the resources to succeed and advance in their role with Berg.
  • Identify and maintain high potential future foreman within the Berg team
  • Identify best practices in job sequencing and speaking on behalf of Berg to clients and general contractors as needed.
  • Build morale on project sites with positive reinforcement and feedback.

Basic Skills and Qualifications

  • Valid Drivers License
  • Knowledge of all core service offerings: Drywall, Paint, and Plaster. Specialty knowledge of one of Berg’s offerings is extremely helpful.
  • Great sense of comradery, team spirit and the attitude of ‘wanting to be the best’
  • Financial acumen.  
  • Maintains confidentiality and leadership professionalism.
  • Ability to plan, visualize, and create a vision in regards to production setup.  
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, groups and in one-on-one situations.
  • Detail oriented, through and production/goal driven.
  • Ability to multi-task, problem solve, and prioritize in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend complex documents, blueprints and construction documents as well as accurately execute and delegate execution to subleaders.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crawl, reach, crouch, climb and balance.
  • Knowledge of how to use an Apple iPad.
  • Software skills; proficient in MS Excel, MS Word, and MS Outlook, and document editing software (e.g., Foreman App, BirdDogHR, PlanGrid, ProCore, etc.).

Preferred Education/Experience 

  • 3 - 5 years of related experience in the construction field; or an equivalent mix of education and field experience.
  • Previously held or hold lead jobsite role
