SiREM, an operating division of Geosyntec Consultants, is seeking a Laboratory Sample Reception Assistant to join our dynamic team in Guelph, Ontario. We require a detail oriented, highly organized individual with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to coordinate lab sample reception, shipping, and receiving activities for our growing laboratory and production facility serving the site remediation industry. 

Duties include, but are not limited to, sample reception, logging, and shipping coordination, chemical and supply inventory, and general tasks to support laboratory staff.  We require an individual who can perform accurate data entry, produce neat and organized documentation, and  work collaboratively with other members of the laboratory team, our customers, clients, and suppliers.

SiREM is a state-of-the-art groundwater remediation and environmental technology laboratory with locations in Canada and in the U.S. SiREM provides a suite of unique, science-based products and testing services, primarily related to the remediation of chlorinated solvents and other recalcitrant chemicals at sites in North America and around the world.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Receive, unpack, verify accurate shipping info for all laboratory supplies and goods, and deliver to the designated lab area;
  • Sample reception including retrieving samples from the loading dock, reviewing documentation/checking status of samples, and logging samples into our data management system;
  • Organize samples according to analytical requirements;
  • Ensure supply inventories are maintained;
  • Prepare and ship sampling kits (or products) upon customers’ requests; inform customers on logistics, and retain documentation of customer communications;
  • Chemical and lab supplies inventory tracking and ordering support;
  • Work with couriers for pickup and delivery, tracking shipment progress, and support customs clearance, when required;
  • Clean and sterilize laboratory equipment;
  • General laboratory housekeeping duties;
  • Maintain laboratory storage facilities;
  • Observe and abide by the company’s health and safety policies and procedures; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Training: This position requires WHIMIS training and laboratory specific health and safety training, and may require first aid, transport of dangerous goods (TDG), International Air Transport Association (IATA), or CPR training and medical monitoring, paid for by the firm. We also offer professional and technical development opportunities including in-house seminars, webinars, and mentoring, that allow our staff to build the technical and business skills necessary to become successful laboratory employees.
  • Work Environment: While performing the duties of the job, the individual will work in the laboratory; the individual will be trained to work with fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals under safe controlled conditions wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (e.g., laboratory coats, safety glasses, gloves) and engineering controls (e.g., fume hoods, elephant trunks).  The individual is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the environment is moderate.

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE 

  • Post-secondary education in chemistry or other science related field or high school diploma with one to two years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education or experience (required).

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with data input and analysis, including preparing tables (preferred).
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications, including Access and Excel (required).
  • Hands on sample reception experience (asset).
  • Familiarity with 5S (asset).
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, be self-motivated and possess a strong work ethic (required).
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 22 Kilograms unaided and 22-45 Kilograms with assistance and/or proper engineering controls (required).
  • Ability to regularly use hands to grip, grasp, finger, handle, or feel; and to sit, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl (required).
  • Ability to work Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm/6pm depending on delivery truck schedules (required).
  • Valid Canadian driver’s license, reliable transportation, and satisfactory driving record for business travel (required).
