SUMMARY

Plans layout, fabricates, assembles, installs, and repairs metal parts, assemblies, equipment, and products by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Reads and interprets work orders, complicated blueprints, weld and finish symbols, sketches, and product specifications. Properly applies information to determine the best sequence and method for fabricating, assembling, and completing jobs.

Determines, locates, marks, and performs complex layouts for cutting, forming, or punching according to provided specifications.

Sets up and operates metal fabrication machines such as copper shears, drill presses, pipe bender, pipe copper, saws, basic press brakes, ironworkers, hand tools (plasma, stud gun, etc.), welding machines, spot welder, and bending rolls.

Properly and accurately positions, aligns, fits, and welds together parts using appropriate welding methods.

Assembles, trims, files, grinds, deburrs, and smooths surfaces, corners, and welds. Able to assist in the polishing of fabricated projects.

Designs constructs, and uses templates, fixtures, and jigs when necessary.

Understands and uses knowledge of the working properties of metals, the how's and why's of metal's response to fabrication processes such as warpage, bending, and straightening.

Understands and uses knowledge of welding methods, MIG, TIG, and stick. Stainless and Aluminum Fabricators are able to TIG aluminum, MIG, TIG, and purge weld stainless steel.

Functions as working lead person on larger jobs or trainer for Fabricator I employees or others.

Assists in quoting fabrication jobs.

Notifies the manager of any need for equipment or facility repairs.

Verifies and accounts for conformance of workpiece to specifications and customer expected quality levels.

Uses a computer and other systems (s) to properly charge labor costs.

Works safely, following safety guidelines in Shickel Corporation Safety Manual; attends department safety meetings, and report and/or corrects unsafe acts and conditions. Files injury reports same day of injury.

Exhibits teamwork and cooperation, as well as all policies and standards of behaviors contained in the Shickel Corporation Guidebook of Principles, Policies, and Benefits.

Responsible for safe and proper use of company vehicles, following all applicable S.C. policies, state and federal laws.

Effectively operate job-specific software, in addition to standard S.C. software, in a windows-based environment.

The employee will be familiar with and will perform duties as outlined in the Shickel Quality Management System.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

One year certificate from college or technical school; or two to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

Weld using stick, TIG, and MIG in all metals, and to purge weld. Ability to pass pertinent welding certifications as required. Should also be proficient in sheet metal layout. Ability to perform basic data entry on a computer.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, blueprints, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Write routine reports and correspondence. Effectively present information to the manager and other employees. Fill out necessary internal paperwork.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Calculate various quantities such as percentage, area, circumference, and volume. Apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Use a tape measure and precision measuring tools accurately. Measure and compute thicknesses and sizes common to sheet and construction metals in any standard unit of measure. Ability to convert measurements between decimals and fractions.

REASONING ABILITY

Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where standardization exists. Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. The employee frequently is required to talk, hear, and use hands to handle, feel or operate tools. Frequent bending, climbing, continuous standing, eye/hand coordination, and manual dexterity are descriptive to the performance of this position. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and sometimes exposed to high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, and extreme heat. Eye and ear protection are also required for welding conditions. The performance also includes moderate bending, continuous standing, climbing, eye/hand coordination, and manual dexterity. The noise level in the work environment is often loud.
