SENIOR SAFETY MANAGER

The Senior Safety Manager is responsible for leading McGough’s safety efforts through managing risk, evaluating training, implementing corporate programs, conducting safety training, performing jobsite inspections, advocating, and fostering a safety culture, and assisting crews with safe work practices. The position reports to the Vice President of Field Operations and partners with Project Executives, Project Managers, Superintendents, and Foremen to ensure project site compliance with McGough Environmental, Health & Safety and risk control policies and procedures. The Senior Safety Manager supervises Safety Managers and Safety Coordinators. The Senior Safety Manager collaborates with the Field Operations team that ultimately assigns the safety staffing along with the rest of the Field Operations staffing for each project. 


The Senior Safety Manager identifies, eliminates, and controls hazardous conditions that may lead to injury and or property damage using job specific safety standards, best management practices, training, and disciplinary techniques. In addition, this position assists in safety audits and aligns operating unit’s safety programs with the overall corporate safety strategy. The position is also expected to engage in safety incident investigations.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Demonstrated management, leadership, and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate well 
    (both written and verbally) and train others.
  • Four-year degree in Occupational Safety and Health, engineering, or related discipline.
  • 10+ years of building construction safety experience or equivalent education and experience.
  • A minimum of OSHA 500 training, First Aid/CPR/BBP and AED training.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety/environmental principles and techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify known potential exposures and lead implementation of corrective 
    actions.
  • Demonstrated computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office suite programs.

Preferred: 

  • CSP certification

Office and Travel:

The Safety Department offices at McGough Field Operations in Roseville. Travel is required for regional meetings 
including some overnight travel. 

Responsibilities and Tasks:

McGough Safety Team: 

  • Perform all functions and responsibilities in partnership with McGough’s culture, corporate vision, ethics, 
    and code of conduct
  • Effectively lead all members of the Safety Team
  • Build positive working relationships with Safety Team, McGough project and jobsite staff and 
    subcontractor safety representatives
  • Oversee the development and enhancement of the overall project safety program
  • Manage time and resource allocation appropriately to provide overall safety leadership to assigned 
    project(s)
  • Strive for continued growth of professional knowledge and skills to contribute to the team dynamic
  • Provide coverage for Safety Managers when they are absent

Safety Oversight: 

  • Enforce safety program and related policies and procedures. Implement immediate corrective actions in
    accordance with McGough, federal, state, and local regulations, and owner requirements
  • Oversee assistance to project management personnel to ensure compliance with all safety, accident and 
    fire programs, procedures, and policies
  • Stop any unsafe practices, train on correct behavior, and recommend suitable disciplinary action
  • Ensure that pre-construction planning meetings take place at the start of each project with McGough 
    jobsite staff and subcontractors to review overall site safety program and job hazard analysis for their 
    scope of work, and ensure plans are in place to mitigate risks
  • Provide technical and administrative direction to on-site safety personnel
  • Involvement in OSHA inspections and related follow-up
  • Accident/incident investigation
  • Research safety topics 

Safety Direction, Supervision, & Training: 

  • Interface with insurance company regarding claims
  • Budget preparation and cost control for group
  • Review and comply with ongoing department staff goals
  • Daily supervision of team
  • Create, communicate, and review ongoing staff goals
  • Ensure proper training is provided and maintained within team
  • Work with HR for hiring, coaching and terminations within team
  • Maintain appropriate documentation for personnel issues within assigned group
  • Always ensure strictest of confidentiality
  • Implement awareness/branding campaigns and techniques to create and maintain a strong safety culture
  • Implement progressive/proactive safety solutions throughout a large, complex organization
  • Work with multiple business groups and manage/reconcile their diverse and sometimes conflicting 
    priorities
  • Manage progressive return to work/modified duty programs and workers’ compensation claim 
    management experience in multiple states

Tracking & Administrative: 

  • Evaluate training needs and make recommendations to Safety Team, jobsite leadership, and/or to 
    subcontractors
  • Ensure all jobsite inspections take place regularly and all reports are submitted (Power Point/Excel)
  • Review all safety documentation/reports for accuracy and completeness
  • Track and identify trends
  • Maintain job site specific safety administrative files and records 

Additional: 

  • Ability to pass customer required background and security screenings
  • Hold a valid driver’s license with a clear record
  • Assume additional assignments/tasks as needed

Position involves sitting for extended periods of time at employee’s work station and during meetings as well as while traveling, either by plane or car. Employee will be required to visit construction jobsites which will expose the employee to dirt, dust, uneven surfaces, outdoor weather conditions and extreme temperatures.
