The Clay County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a full-time Deputy Sheriff.
The Deputy Sheriff performs a variety of functions in providing general law enforcement work to maintain law and order throughout Clay County. Responsibilities include investigating illegal or suspicious activities and completing and maintaining accurate records and reports.
Clay County Deputies are scheduled to work 40 hours during the week and cover unscheduled hours on call.
You will perform a variety of duties including:
- Enforce and uphold the law, which includes criminal and traffic violations.
- Respond to emergency requests for assistance. (medical, fire, assaults, domestic disputes, etc.)
- Answer questions and complaints received from the public.
- Patrol Clay county, giving particular attention to areas where crime is prevalent.
- Learn the geographical area of Clay County.
- Document all incidents through report writing.
- Take proper care of vehicle and equipment assigned to them.
- Transport, process, and supervise prisoners.
- Report all possible safety hazards which may endanger the health, safety, or convenience to the public.
- Perform duties as required, which include (but are not limited to) civil process, warrant service, transportation of juvenile offenders, detox patients, extradition, and emergency committals.
- Complete thorough traffic accident investigation, complete reports and be prepared to testify to the conclusion drawn from the investigation.
- Conduct criminal investigations to the conclusion of an arrest where possible, and be prepared to support that arrest in a court of law through properly obtained evidence and testimony by the officer.
- Carry out all orders received from the Sheriff, Chief Deputy and Deputy Sergeant.
- Perform other duties as requested by the Sheriff.
To be qualified for this position, you will need:
- Two years of college or vocational school; or two years of work experience as a certified law enforcement officer; or two years of active, full-time military experience; or four years of military reserve experience; or four years of relevant work experience. Comparable combination of education and experience may be considered
- Meet all requirements of the South Dakota Law Enforcement Standards and Training Commission and successfully complete the mandatory training of the State of South Dakota
- Possess a valid driver's license and must maintain a safe driving record with Clay County.
- Basic knowledge of the principles, policies, procedures, codes, laws, and statutes of law enforcement operations.
- Ability to make appropriate decisions quickly and with tact and impartiality.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, other agencies, and the public.
- Ability to maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
- Must pass a pre-employment background process
