SEATTLE REP is seeking a resourceful and talented Associate Costume Director to join the Costume Department Team. The Associate Director is a critical member of the Costume Department and provides essential support for our high-quality productions.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The primary function of the Associate Costume Director is to collaborate with the Costume Director in the daily operations of the Costume Department including scheduling, purchasing and accounting, rentals, production needs, and supplies management.

Essential Functions:

In Collaboration with Costume Director

  • Create shop labor and production calendar to include budgeting/labor allocation as needed.
  • Manage staff schedule.
  • Manage over-hire schedule.
  • Attend meetings and help lead shop meetings.
  • Perform bi-annual review and evaluations for staff in costume/wardrobe areas including, but not limited to workroom and costume storage.
  • With the Director and Design Associate, oversee the completion of both made to order and pulled costumes.
  • With the Director - work with the IT Department to determine and/or improve technology needs for the costume shop.
  • With Director, responsible for workroom organization.
  • Help Design Associate during build times and tech process, as needed.
  • Attend Tech/Previews when the Costume Director is not on site, as needed.
  • Work with the Director to improve the roles of Associate and Director by co-authoring goals, tasks, and playing to each other's strengths.

Supervisory Functions

  • Supervise Costume Stock Manager and Costume Department apprentice: assign and oversee projects.
  • Assist the Director in staffing, including identifying staffing needs, making recommendations and suggestions for hiring and evaluation of staff work abilities.
  • Shop personnel supervision and management.
  • Create a schedule and work environment that allows for self-selected outside opportunities for growth, education, or work (I.e.: costume design opportunities, teaching, continuing education).

Department Financials

  • In collaboration with Production Finance Associate, perform management of petty cash, purchase orders, check requests, cost control, and credit card statement reconciliation for Costume Department.
  • Facilitate costumes and procedures related to contract projects for other organizations.
  • Manage staff time for payroll and budgeting purposes.
  • Train new Design Assistants on budget procedure needs.

Materials and Supplies Needs

  • Shop for shows and Costume Department as needed.
  • Create and seek out more ethical and sustainable vendor relationships.
  • Budget and maintain inventory of notions and basic shop stock.
  • Manage equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Work with Director to determine best products and reordering schedule for the workroom including researching and evaluation of preferred products and replacement products as needed.
  • Update Safety Data Sheets as needed.

Department’s Health

  • OSHA/WSHA/Covid-19 compliance protocol implementation.
  • Post/distribute documents and inform workroom of information relating to schedules, procedures, and meetings.
  • Along with Director, responsible for workroom organization.
  • Organize and maintain offsite stock with assistance from Stock Manager.
  • Proactive engagement and implementation of EDI (Equity Diversity & Inclusion) practices.
  • Attend meetings pertinent to production, costumes, all SR (Seattle Rep) staff, and EDI work.
  • Contribute to positive work culture and employee experience.
  • Help create and maintain a respectful and productive work environment.

 

Minimum qualifications

  • Training or experience in Bookkeeping/Management/Accounting or four years’ experience in professional theater production.
  • Knowledge of and experience in basic accounting procedures and budgeting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Commitment to racial equity and social justice.

  • Training or experience in Costume Shop management.
  • Possess excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Possess excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Be able to work independently and as a team.
  • Be self-motivated and a self-starter.
  • Demonstrated experience in time and project management.
  • A good sense of humor.
