Begin your Law Enforcement Career today by becoming a Part-Time Jailer for the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. We are a 24/7 facility that houses up to 20 inmates. Our Jailers are the principle guardian of the county jail. All jobs involve working with inmates or families of inmates.
The position of Part-Time Jailer starts at a base of $16.81/hour plus shift differential for night and weekend hours.
As a Part-Time Jailer, here’s what you’ll get to do:
- In-process arrestees and Out-process inmates to be released using proper procedures
- Account for all inmate money and record all property brought in by an arrestee. Account for property released by the inmate to other persons
- Administer medications as prescribed and ensure the well-being of the inmates
- Serve meals to the inmates and ensure meals meet the criteria as specified in the vendor’s bid
- Ensure the security of the jail facility to prevent escape or harm to other inmates or officers.
- Responsible for Jail management, which includes: public relations, oral and written communication, maintaining files, and relating with a wide range of individuals.
- Ensure that the work release inmates are accepted and released according to schedule and shall ensure no contraband is allowed into the jail facility.
- Assist the public with fingerprints for background checks
- Supervise visitation while maintaining the security of the jail.
- Ensure the facility is maintained according to cleanliness standards including the washing of laundry as is necessary
- Conduct visual surveillance of inside and outside areas of the facility.

What you need to be eligible:
- High school / GED required. Post-secondary education in related field preferred.
- Previous experience preferred
- Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age
- Must successfully complete a criminal and employment background check
- Maintain a high level of physical fitness
- Able to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Ability to learn and follow basic criminal and traffic laws, code of criminal procedures and other codes and procedures
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to develop and maintain positive professional relationships with other employees, agencies of government, and the general public.
- Demonstrated organizational skills.
