KBS Constructors, Inc. is looking for a highly motivated individual with strong team leadership skills to support the estimating department in our Topeka office. This position is responsible for bid administration in preparing estimates for a variety of projects which may include solicitation of subcontractors/suppliers, performing takeoff for all divisions of construction, and participation in bid day efforts. Scope of work to be estimated will vary from $10,000 to $1,000,000 or larger.

Estimators must possess excellent interpersonal skills, communicate well, influence effectively, and be comfortable in a highly fluid/ambiguous environment striving for excellence with high integrity.

Responsibilities

• Review proposal specifications and drawings to determine scope of work and required contents of estimate.
• Assist in determining if project meets “Bid Smart” requirements.
• Prepare discipline estimates by calculating complete takeoff of scope of work.
• Review and obtain, if required, bid bond, builder’s risk, building permit, sales tax status and insurance.
• Review and obtain bid bond, builder’s risk, building permit, sales tax status and insurance.
• Identify qualified subcontractors and vendors. Verify scope and price.
• Prepare Basis of Cost Proposal Reports.
• Assist during preparation by answering inquiries and final evaluation of submitted bids as required.
• Support other department personnel as required. May include preparing estimates in other disciplines.
• May review design options and recommend best solution based on cost, engineering quality, or availability of materials.
• Verify bid coverages of all disciplines of work prior to bid day.
• Collaborate/Communicate with project management team (project manager, superintendent, etc.)
• Prepare preliminary project schedules as necessary to capture duration of project.
• Hold review meetings for all estimates with project manager.
• Have estimates ready to review 24 hours prior to bid.
• Follow estimating standard operating procedures.
• Meet annual goals.
• Attend “All Company” and Leadership meetings.
• Perform additional assignments per supervisor’s direction.

Skills

• Knowledge of the Topeka and/or Manhattan market and proven positive track record with area subcontractors/suppliers is a plus, but not required.
• Strong preference for technical problem-solving expertise.
• Strong skills in facilitation, issue resolution and decision making across functions in a highly complex environment.
• Strong listening ability: able to hear what is said, understand it, communicate, and engage.
• Able to influence others: decision-making, persuasion, problem-solving, and trust/credibility building.
• Must be comfortable interacting with senior leadership.
• Advanced Knowledge with the following software preferred: On Screen Takeoff, Outlook, Word, Project, and Excel.
• Know, understand, and live the KBS Mission, Vision and Core Values and use them to guide daily activities.

 Education and Experience

• BS degree in Engineering or Construction Management or 3-5 years in construction industry as an estimator or project manager.
• Field experience is recommended.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Must pass background and drug screening,
