For over 110 years Childhaven has been a leader in serving children, families, and communities that have experienced trauma and adversity. In the past few years, we have been adding services and locations, becoming more community-based, and forming partnerships to increase our impact. In June 2020, Childhaven consolidated with Renton Area Youth and Family Services (RAYS) and Art with Heart, which further expanded our capacity to better serve more children, families, and communities. Childhaven is seeking a dynamic Youth Life Coach to work with our RAYS Up program to support us in achieving our mission, vision, goals, and values. This is a hands-on role that needs an individual who has overcome their own life challenges and are excited to share their own resilience story with youth that may find themselves in similar situations.  

Above all, the selected candidate will bring enthusiasm for helping us build and support a passionate and positive impacts in the lives of children, families, and communities. This position is located within the Greater Renton Area and primarily serves students (ages 11-24) within the Renton School District.

Primary Job Duties:

Youth Support Services

  • Provide individual coaching to youth at-risk 2-4 times per month, covering topics such as identifying strengths and interests, identifying barriers to success, and setting SMART goals.
  • Conduct social skills groups (with 8-10 youth) in school- and community-based settings.
  • Plan and execute 6-8 out-of-school activities during the school year, and a five-week summer program, maintaining a safe environment for youth, staff and interns at all times.
  • Provide case management services, including referrals to counseling, basic needs services and others to support youth and their families in developing stability and self-sufficiency.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with families, schools and /or community contacts to effectively monitor participant’s progress, and advocate for participants’ needs.
  • Serve as task-supervisor for student interns (as needed), including modeling, training, assigning projects, monitoring workload, answering questions and evaluating the intern’s performance in an effective and timely manner.

Administrative Duties

  • Microsoft Word and Office Proficiency
  • Maintain client records in accordance with agency policy and program contracts utilizing an Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Annual self-assessment and consult with team in setting goals for program improvement. Consult on program design and curriculum revision when needed to reflect current youth culture and emerging community issues.
  • Collect data as needed to track program outcomes and complete reports to Clinical Director, Administrative Support, and outside organizations in a timely manner.

Other Duties as assigned

  • Participate in professional development opportunities regarding anti-racism, oppression, and cultural competency and regularly assess own performance and program for related improvements.
  • Participate in ongoing job-related professional development, in-service trainings and continuing education
  • Complies with all Childhaven policies and procedures
  • Complies with the agency's policy and procedure regarding the identification and reporting of child abuse

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Prefer BA/BS in human services, social work, education or related field
  • At least 2 years of experience in youth development work and/or B.A./B.S. in human services, social work, education or related field
  • Commitment to racial, social, and economic justice including anti-racism work
  • Must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, safe driving record and auto liability insurance (some travel offsite may be necessary)
  • Demonstrated success in working with youth, particularly in group settings.
  • Willing and able to self-identify as a person who has lived experience i.e. has or is receiving mental health services, has interacted with juvenile justice system, struggles with school academics.


  • Multi-lingual
  • Young Adults ages 21-30, with lived experience in receiving services as a youth in complex, child serving systems (juvenile justice, behavioral health, child welfare, special education preferred) and is prepared to use that experience in helping others
  • WA State Peer Counselor Certification preferred or ability to secure WA State Peer Counselor Certification within one year of employment.


  • Childhaven uses a grade and step approach to determine compensation.
  • Every position is assigned a Grade on a vertical scale of 1 to 12. The higher the Grade, the higher the requirements for specialized knowledge, skills, experience, education, training, and responsibility.
  • Each person is assigned a Step on a horizontal scale of 0 year to 20 years for a Grade based on recognition of every individual’s relevant and related years of experience. Exact experience in a grade receives 100% credit and similar experience in a lower grade receives approximately a 50% credit.
