SEATTLE REP is seeking a resourceful and highly talented Master Scenic Carpenter to join the scene shop. The Master Scenic Carpenter is a vital member of the scene shop team and provides essential support for realizing our artistic visions in every production.

ABOUT THE POSITION

In collaboration with other members of the scene shop and production staff, the Master Carpenter is responsible for scheduling and leading the build and load-in of all the scenery that goes from our shop to our stages.

Typical duties include: 

Lead and participate in scenic builds

  • Dispense build information and project assignments to the carpentry staff
  • In collaboration with Technical Direction, estimate and maintain a schedule of the scenic build
  • Coordinate arrival of scenery to the paint department
  • Read and occasionally create construction drawings working from design drawings, renderings, and models
  • Fabricate scenic elements out of various materials using stationary and hand tools

Coordinate and lead scenic load-in

  • Manage and lead the load-in of scenery onto the stages at Seattle Rep
  • Collaborate with Technical Direction and the Master Stage Carpenter with the creation and installation of theatrical effects and automation

Maintain a clean and safe scene shop and work environment

  • Properly handle, use, and dispose of all scenic construction materials
  • Clean and maintain equipment and tools
  • Observe and follow all rules and safety guidelines

Assist in the maintenance of scenery during load-in and run of Seattle Rep productions

  • Build, install, and maintain the scenery on stage during load-in, tech rehearsals, and the run

Serve as an essential contributor to Seattle Rep’s culture and success

  • Add constructively to the collaborative and collegial health of the organization
  • Add actively and constructively to the equity, diversity, and inclusion work of the organization, including attending all-staff training sessions

Minimum qualifications

  • 4 years of experience working with the tools and materials typically found in a professional scene shop
  • 2 years in a leadership role in a scene shop environment
  • Advanced knowledge of scenic construction techniques
  • Advanced knowledge of metalworking and woodworking tools
  • A demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member and leader of a team
  • Ability to work extended periods on projects overhead, on saw horses, on floor level, vertically and horizontally oriented
  • Ability to work with materials weighing up to 50lbs unassisted
  • Commitment to racial equity and social justice

Desired qualifications

  • Experience with CNC tools
  • Experience with CAD drafting
  • Advanced knowledge of scenic automation and rigging systems and equipment
