After initial training with retiring individual, Mechanic independently performs general maintenance and repairs to Ford E450 and Ford F550 Chassis buses for Three Rivers Community Action’s Transportation Department (Hiawathaland Transit); assists with the coordination of external vendors to perform periodic maintenance and minor repairs; and provides upkeep to Transportation facilities. The mechanic also effectively collaborates with the Agency’s Transportation Director, Operations Managers and Compliance/Safety/Training Manager to ensure program needs are met.  (Full Position Description will be shared with applicants selected for in-person interviews; to request full description, call 507-316-0610.)

Hiawathaland Public Transportation is administered by Three Rivers Community Action, Inc., a non-profit agency providing economic opportunities that strengthen individuals, families and communities in southeastern Minnesota.

Full-time (Monday-Friday), 40 hours per week between 7am and 5pm. Will consider 4 days (32 hours) per week.

$25-30/hour, depending on qualifications. Excellent benefits including generous Paid Time Off (PTO). 

Ideally, Mechanic will perform most work at the Plainview garage/shop. However, we will consider basing an experienced mechanic in Northfield or Red Wing. Must be willing and able to travel in personal vehicle (with mileage reimbursed at IRS rate) to all Agency locations across Rice, Goodhue and Wabasha Counties. 

Job offers are contingent on a reference check; a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review; a criminal background check with fingerprinting through the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS); and a pre-employment DOT drug test. Employees in this position are subject to random and reasonable suspicion DOT drug and alcohol testing throughout their employment. 

Qualifications:

Required

  • One year of work experience performing maintenance and repair on buses or medium-duty vehicles.
  • Associate Degree or Certificate in Automotive Repair or related field; in lieu of degree/certificate, two additional years of relevant mechanical work experience (total of three years of work experience).
  • Demonstrated success in performing a wide variety of maintenance/repair tasks requiring an understanding of bus/automotive repair; will be tested.
  • Valid Driver License.
  • Class C Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger Endorsement must be obtained within three months of employment; if no CDL, Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) must be obtained prior to first day of employment.
    • Applicants without Class C CDL and Passenger Endorsement: employee will need to obtain Class C CDL and Passenger Endorsement, complete all required training, demonstrate safe and proficient skills, and be deemed competent by supervisor. Failure to do so within approximately 90 days of hire date may result in termination of employment.
  • Current DOT Medical Examiners Certificate (“Med Card”) must be obtained prior to first day of employment.
  • Proficiency with computers, including a basic working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Must provide own basic hand tools.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

 Preferred

  • Experience working on buses.
  • Comprehensive mechanical expertise gained via additional years of mechanical work experience.
  • ASE Certified.
