Summary:

This position leads the Dive and Vessel Department as a Dive Safety Officer and Vessel Safety Officer in the administration of Dive and Vessel activities carried out by the Alaska SeaLife Center. This position also oversees the administration of the Security Department and ensures safety compliance Center wide. 

Education/Training Requirements & Preferences: 

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Minimum of five years’ supervisory experience. Minimum of five years’ experience in dive and vessel safety operations at a university, aquarium, or zoo. Current Dive Instructor with a nationally recognized scuba certification agency required. Current Divers Alert Network Instructor qualified to teach Diving First Aid for the Professional Diver preferred. Current repair and maintenance certifications for regulator repair, dive cylinder maintenance, and dry suit repair preferred. 

Required Qualifications: 

  1. Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of OSHA, and EPA regulations.
  2. Possess strong organizational, written, verbal, and excellent training and presentation skills.
  3. Effective human relations and communication skills with the ability to read, analyze, and interpret regulations and other documents.
  4. Proficient knowledge of computers and typical production software (MS Office, Word, Excel, etc.)
  5. Ability to work in both office and field environments.

Essential Duties: 

  1. Functions as a Dive and Vessel Safety Officer in the administration of underwater and vessel operation training activities carried out by the Alaska SeaLife Center.
  2. Maintains an active SCUBA Instructor certification and carries out both beginner and advanced training for ASLC divers. Functions as a diver/dive tender during underwater activities carried out by the Alaska SeaLife Center.
  3. Maintains an active Divers Alert Network (DAN) Instructor rating and is qualified to teach the First Aid for Professional Divers course which includes First Aid, CPR (HCP-level), OAdministration, and Field Neuro, and conducts this class for the divers when required.
  4. Conducts safety meetings, audits, and inspections to ensure compliance, evaluate performance, identify corrective action, and implement follow up assessments.
  5. Plans, implements, manages, and maintains comprehensive environmental safety and health programs on premises and at project site locations.
  6. Provides project teams with guidance on health and safety and confirm project site fulfills industry, local, state, and federal guidelines, and regulations.
  7. Collaborates with management to review and maintain an Emergency Action Plan and serve as primary contact for project site injury and incident notification, investigation, and case management. Maintains a written log of safety inspection activities, reports, and correspondence.
  8. Performs routine maintenance on dive equipment.
  9. Supervises and approves all ASLC boating activities to ensure planning, adequate training and skills of the operators, safe and healthful practices, and compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards.
  10. Trains employees as vessel operators and develops curricula to train operators capable of rendering all necessary boating and trailering educational services to the staff.
  11. Inventories, organizes, and secures all boating equipment in a safe and healthful manner according to regulation and standards, and dispenses equipment as needed.
  12. Services and repairs or secures services and repairs of all boating equipment in a timely manner according to applicable standards and regulations and maintains current logs reflecting all servicing and repair of equipment.
  13. Supervises personnel matters within the Security Department. Assigns and checks work, establishes schedules, sets deadlines, and delegates authority.  Sets performance standards for staff.  Prepares annual performance evaluations.  Makes personnel related recommendations to the COO.
  14. Ensures the maintenance and repair of the ASLC vehicle fleet. Drafts annual proactive maintenance plan.
  15. May be required to fill a Security shift if necessary.
  16. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, good will, cooperation, and providing high standards of service.
  17. Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.
  18. Performs other related duties as assigned.
