Fire Sprinkler Fitter - Apprentice

Apprentice sprinkler fitters aid in the installation of automatic fire sprinkler systems in new and existing buildings in all types of construction, mostly commercial, using valves, hangers, steel and plastic pipe.  They assist the sprinkler fitter in laying out, assembling, installing, and maintaining fire protection systems.

Job Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • At least 18 years old
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Problem solving skills
  • Ability to coordinate and work well with others
  • Proven ability and track record of performing work in a timely manner and meeting deadlines
  • Ability to lift ­­up to at least 50 pounds
  • Ability to climb ladders
  • Not afraid of heights
  • Strong mechanical background preferred
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced construction environment

Job Responsibilities

  • Preparing system components for installation.
  • Laying out of system components for installation.
  • Maintaining a clean and organized work area.
  • Assisting the sprinkler fitter in the installation of the fire protection system.
  • Keeping tools and equipment clean and organized.
  • Cutting and boring holes in structures, such as bulkheads, decks, walls, and mains, prior to pipe installation, using hand and power tools.

Skills Required:

  • Working knowledge of basic hand and power tools
  • Good communication skills
  • Work well with others
  • Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Mathematics - Using mathematics, including measuring, counting, basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and dimensions with and without the aid of a calculator
  • Ability to read to a tape measure
  • Ability to read a blue print/drawing - initial training provided

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Industrial, Commercial, & Residential building environments with moderate to high noise levels, and comfort with working at heights
  • Varying weather conditions, could be inside or outside
  • Mostly a physically demanding role. Majority of the daily demand is standing and walking stairs and climbing ladders
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Working out of town, nights, weekends and holidays as needed
  • Ability to work at various heights off ladders and lifts ranging from 8-20; but possibly as high as 100 feet
