Summary

Overall responsibility for the successful completion of utility construction projects, on time and within budget. Directly supervise and coordinate activities of utility construction work such as trenching, culverts, laying pipe for storm water or sanitation sewers, drains and watermains. Oversee the production, safety, and performance of a utility crew as they operate one or several types of power construction equipment, such as excavators, front end loaders, shovels, tampers, saws, and welding equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise, coordinate, or schedule the activities of utilities construction crew.
  • Read specifications, such as blueprints, to determine construction requirements or to plan procedures.
  • Inspect work progress, equipment, or construction sites to verify safety or to ensure that specifications are met.
  • Locate, measure, and mark site locations or placement of equipment, using measuring and marking equipment.
  • Coordinate work activities with other construction project activities.
  • Assign work to employees, based on material or worker requirements of specific jobs.
  • Estimate material or worker requirements to complete jobs.
  • Confer with managerial or technical personnel, other departments, or contractors to resolve problems or to coordinate activities.
  • Order or requisition materials or supplies.
  • Analyze worker or production problems and recommend solutions, such as improving production methods or implementing motivational plans.
  • Train workers in construction methods, operation of equipment, safety procedures, and/ or company policies.
  • Record information such as personnel, production, or operational data on specified forms or reports.
  • Aid workers engaged in construction activities, using hand tools or other equipment.
  • Arrange for repairs of equipment or machinery.
  • Suggest or initiate personnel actions, such as promotions, transfers, or hires.
  • Learn, teach, and follow safety regulations.
  • Monitor operations to ensure that health and safety standards are met.
  • Keep records of time, material or equipment usage or problems encountered.
  • Align machines, cutterheads, or depth gauge makers with reference stakes and guidelines or ground or position equipment, following hand signals of other workers.
  • Interact clients and study instructions, plans, or diagrams to establish work requirements. Interactions will include in person meetings, digital communication, and phone communication.
  • Operate heavy construction equipment
  • Train or supervise others in laying pipe.
