Rigging Engineer II

Role Overview:

We are seeking a Rigging Engineer to join our engineering team at our Long Beach facility. Candidate will assist with technical support to our Crane, Construction, Rigging, Industrial, Nuclear and Heavy Transport Divisions. This position offers the opportunity to participate in challenging and unique projects in the heavy-lift and heavy-haul industry. Candidate will work closely with experienced rigging engineers to develop lifting and transportation plans and will review technical work from junior staff. Candidate will assist field and estimating departments in developing load lifting and movement specifications, supporting those departments in their project execution and proposal preparation.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Provide engineered lift drawings showing required rigging/lifting components, equipment positions and clearances.
  • Provide technical guidance and assistance to field and estimating departments in the handling, lifting, and installing of large, heavy, and critical equipment.
  • Design and prepare drawings for temporary items such as lift lugs, lift beams, monorails, jig stands that need to be fabricated. Interface with the purchasing department and vendors as needed to obtain suitable delivery.
  • Survey the construction site as required determining the necessary dimensions and elevations of existing equipment and structures to become aware of potential jobsite interferences and hazards.
  • Employ problem solving skills to resolve rigging related issues.
  • Develop preliminary lifting/construction planning for proposal estimates and presentations.
  • Verify that any of the client’s facilities subjected to temporary forces during lifting operations are adequate to withstand the loads imposed. If they are not, provide means to strengthen or protect the client’s facilities.
  • Participate in client and internal coordination meetings to ensure all design related activities are recognized and properly communicated to all parties involved.
  • Stay current on industry trends, technology, codes, and methods to provide safe and efficient plans.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with Structural Engineering concentration required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • FE/EIT certification. PE License preferred
  • Experience in rigging, below-the-hook, temporary supports design and analysis.
  • Strong background in Construction & procurement.
  • Experience reading, reviewing, and approving shop and fabrication drawings.
  • 1 – 3 years of experience in Rigging structural design/analysis.
  • Up to 20% travel required.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Construction background - 3 years’ experience in rigging.
  • Experience preparing or evaluating critical lifting and heavy transport plans with industry software.
  • Refinery maintenance & turnarounds.
  • Rigging Analysis and solutions
  • Knowledge of ASME, ASTM, AISC codes and experience in their application.
  • Strong interpersonal, written communications, and presentation skills.
  • Experience using modeling software, Solidworks, Autocad 3D, Revit.
  • Knowledge in computational calculations using Mathcad or MatLab.
  • Design experience using RISA 3D or Solidworks Simulation FEA (or equivalent)
  • Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Suite
