Job Description
GEI is seeking respected professionals who aspire to have a positive impact on GEI’s growing design team and are interested in working collaboratively with a talented team of design, management, and technical leaders. GEI will provide a unique opportunity to collaborate across multiple practices to successfully deliver geotechnical, environmental, and hydrogeological design/engineering solutions for our clients in the Ontario Market.
The Canadian operation of GEI is expanding in the Ontario market and GEI is looking for a Geotechnical Engineer in Training (EIT) to join our existing technical team working on projects across Ontario. This position is based in GEI’s office in Barrie, Ontario, and includes regular full-time work (40 hours per week).
Primary Responsibilities:
- Compaction testing using a nuclear densometer for engineered fill, bedding, backfill, granular base and sub-base, asphalt, etc.
- Sampling of soil, granulars and asphalt for laboratory testing.
- On-site concrete testing or sampling.
- Subgrade, foundation, and rebar inspections.
- Geotechnical laboratory testing (i.e. water contents, hydrometers, etc.).
- Materials laboratory testing (i.e. proctors, granular sieves, concrete, etc.).
- Safely conduct field exploration, sampling, and inspections under supervision and independently (e.g. boreholes, test pits, surveys, chemistry sampling, water level monitoring, slope inspections).
- Coordinate tasks and small geotechnical projects under guidance of senior engineering staff.
- Prepare borehole logs, review soil and bedrock samples, draft figures in AutoCAD, and assist with report preparation, calculations and analysis for complex projects.
Qualifications
- B.Sc. in Civil or Geological Engineering is required (Geotechnical emphasis preferred).
- EIT designation is required (or the ability to obtain within 3 months), and ability to work towards obtaining P.Eng. designation.
- 0 to 2 years of Civil Engineering / Geotechnical Engineering experience required.
- Must have a positive work attitude and ability to work safely and efficiently when managing multiple tasks.
- Ability to work independently or with a team in a multi-disciplinary environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with MS Office, including Word, Excel, and Power Point.
- The successful candidate will have the ability and willingness to travel and perform field work, even under inclement weather and physically demanding conditions.
- Position will require the candidate to adhere to work assignments/schedules, be self-motivated, organized and have a keen sense of detail.
- Candidate must be willing to work in addition to a standard 40-hour work week when needed.
- Nuclear-gauge certification preferred but not required.
- Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle.
