Cover roofs with roofing material other than sheet metal, including composition built-up roofs using asphalt or pitch, roofing felts and gravel modified bitumen systems; or single ply roof membranes including EPDM and PVC. Lays and adheres insulation, in asphalt or by mechanically fastening with nails or screws and plates. Applies asphalt or pitch to roof using push or pull type felt machines or by mop. When applying modified bitumen to roof, mops hot asphalt or spreads adhesive mastic onto roof and imbeds the membrane or uses propane torch to heat the bottom of the membrane and rolls membrane into onto roof until roof covering is as specified. When applying EPDM, PVC or other single ply membranes, rolls out the roofing membrane and seals the seams as specified by the manufacturer of the membrane. Cuts roofing material to size. Cuts strips of flashing and fits them into angles formed by walls, vents and intersecting roof surfaces.
Duties and Responsibilities
- A typical workday starts at 6:00am and we expect employees in this position to work overtime, which may include weekends and extended overnight travel. Average day is 8 – 10 hours.
- Work in a variety of physical positions and activities for extended periods which include bending and twisting, kneeling and working on knees, squatting, stooping, crawling, extensive use of arms and shoulders. Lifting and carrying materials (up to 75 pounds and above shoulders also). Gripping of small/large hand and power tools and safe use of tools assigned.
- Work in all conditions which include: heat (excess of 100 degrees), cold (below zero), humidity, rain, sunlight, and wind. Roof tear off which is dusty/dirty can irritate the skin, eyes, and nose (pitch burn). Includes working on loose gravel, slippery tar and other non-perfect walking surfaces.
- Work safely with hot asphalt, (typically 400 + degrees) and other industrial adhesives, glues, and roofing chemicals. This includes the carrying and handling of such materials.
- Be able to lift and climb ladders. May work at heights in exceeds of 100 feet above the ground, on the edge of the roof following strict perimeter safety standards (safety belts, monitors, warning lines).
- Perform basic math functions and follow written and verbal instruction and safety rules.
- Wear personal protective equipment needed for each job activity as required.
- Possess a valid driver license.
