Position Overview

The Ready-Mix Plant Manager is responsible for providing leadership and direction to the plant in all areas including, but not limited to, administration, employee management, production, quality, asset management and maintenance, shipping, purchasing, inventory, safety, and environmental. This position is based out of Jefferson, IA.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Lead and direct the overall activities of the manufacturing facilities of the plant to ensure customer orders are scheduled, produced, and delivered at the lowest possible cost to meet the customers’ requirements while maintaining corporate established safety, quality, and production standards.
  • Implement and manage plant safety programs, ensure compliance, and cooperate with the safety department to ensure the safety of all individuals and equipment at assigned location, and delivered sites.
  • Lead, manage and direct all assigned team members.
  • Perform employee evaluations, discipline, and commendations.
  • Responsible for the development of plant staff and overall succession planning.
  • Analyze plant operations to ensure that the facility maintains peak performance and take advantage of new processes and technologies that are available.
  • Assign drivers to trucks and equipment as required to meet production needs.
  • Manage clock-in / clock-out procedures for all employees assigned to their plant.
  • Manage inventory of raw materials and retail construction materials. Order materials in accordance with the Company purchasing policy.
  • Responsible for quality production including quality control, quality assurance testing and quality customer service.
  • Monitor and observe production and delivery activities of projects assigned to the plant; identify deficiencies and takes corrective actions necessary.
  • Take all actions necessary to ensure that all equipment, trucks, production plants, and all associated equipment are in proper operating condition and ready for service when required without interruption to the production schedule.
  • Confirms that all “pre-trip inspections” are performed and documented, reviews inspections, prioritizes actions necessary, and follows up on needed actions.
  • Plan, schedule and manage plant, truck and equipment maintenance and repairs to minimize production disruptions for all assigned equipment.
  • Manage plant site keeping it properly maintained, mowed, snow removed, vehicles correctly parked, materials properly stored, debris disposed, storm and washout water controlled, and hazardous materials properly stored and disposed.
  • Accurately complete all documentation and reports.
  • Set an example of superior performance.
  • Consistently demonstrates good judgment, technical skill, and mature professionalism in the execution of their duties.
  • Accurately read, interpret, and implement project specifications, customer orders, mix-designs and technical bulletins.
  • Direct and train an effective team.
  • Assist production in any manner including operating other plants, equipment, or driving a ready-mix truck whenever required.
  • Performs duties as directed related to the plant and plant site.
  • Other duties as assigned per supervisor.
  • Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required.

Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred, or demonstrable equivalent.
  • Two years’ experience operating a ready-mix plant and ready-mix equipment and vehicles.
  • Possess appropriate CDL driver’s license and all applicable license endorsements. Driving record must not cause an adverse insurance risk rating or premium increase, and not have any moving violations in the previous 6-months.
  • IDOT Aggregate Technician’s 1 and 2 Certifications.
  • IDOT PCC Technician’s 1 and 2 Certifications.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Must have knowledge and familiarity with personal computers.
  • Full and complete knowledge and familiarity with each staff member’s duty assignments.
  • Full and complete knowledge of plant batching systems.
  • Ability to read, write, and accurately perform basic mathematical functions including adding, subtracting, multiplication and division.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess knowledge of Company policies and procedures, including safety.
  • Must consistently produce and efficient, accurate work product.
  • Must be able to operate and have knowledge of the plant, equipment, and truck characteristics, capabilities, maintenance requirements, and mechanical features.
  • Must have knowledge of;
    • Concrete raw-material properties and characteristics
    • Concrete performance and properties
    • Mix designs.

Work Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years in age or older. 
  • Must pass post-offer employment drug testing, medical exams, and physical agilities testing.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers and/or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA.

  • Must be capable of driving vehicles in off-road conditions for extended periods.
  • Does not have any allergic reactions to concrete or asphalt, its raw materials, ingredients, and additives, gasoline, diesel fuels, lubricants, solvents, or cleaning chemicals.
  • Requires physical exertion, standing, walking, and/or climbing in various climates and ground conditions, including temperature extremes, rain, wind, and snow for extended lengths of time.
  • Must withstand continuous exposures to wind, dust, fumes, and noxious odors.
  • Must possess unrestricted mobility to twist, turn, bend, and lean in all directions, lookup, down and side to side without hesitation or discomfort.
  • Except for conventional corrective aids, must possess normal eyesight, depth of perception, field of vision, normal hearing, quick reaction time, unimpaired eye-hand coordination, and manual dexterity.
  • Must possess the strength, mobility, agility, and balance to ascend access ladders and steps, and to maneuver on equipment and vehicles without assistance.
  • Must repetitively climb and dismount from a high vehicle cab 50-times a day.
  • Must repetitively lift and carry awkwardly shaped objects weighing up to 60-pounds, 50-times a day.
  • Must possess enough strength to continuously operate equipment controls and tools weighing up to 20-pounds for uninterrupted periods of up to 1 hour.
  • Skeletal, joint and muscle system must withstand continuous impact from driving activities.
  • Must be able to walk the plant grounds frequently to inspect materials and ensure proper production equipment is operational.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions; and extreme cold and/or heat.

  • The employee may be exposed to risk of electrical shock or burn.  
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • The employee will be in a construction environment and assigned full-time to a specific plant site.
  • Varied starting time, Monday through Friday with weekend and some holiday and evening work required. Generally, 60-hours per week, as required by production schedules or completion of deadlines.
