Reporting to the ‎Chief Strategy & Growth Officer, the Vice President of Corporate Strategy will be responsible for helping define, identify and develop business opportunities that will enhance Summit Materials’ continued profitable growth in alignment with the company’s overall corporate strategy (ELEVATE Summit, see March 2021 investor presentation) to create shareholder value. This role will be a key member of the Corporate Strategy & Business Development (CSBD) team.

There is some flexibility on the primary location, as long as it is close to one of our main offices (i.e. Denver, Atlanta, Houston, St. Louis or Salt Lake City.)

The successful candidate will direct a small team of high potential individuals on strategy projects including achievement of existing business full potential as well as organic & inorganic growth. The candidate will also help lead the Company’s regular strategic planning process as well as key corporate initiatives. S/he will partner with the business unit Presidents, functional leaders and their teams throughout the organization to leverage the company’s strong position and proactively identify strategic investment opportunities based on the Company’s core competencies, key trends and business value. In addition, this individual will lead external advisors and internal teams to carry out strategy deep dives across the current and adjacent value chains. S/he will have a high degree of access to Summit Materials’ executive team and be expected to present to the Board of Directors as appropriate. 

The successful candidate should have the ability to function at a broad-based, strategic level while also being capable of helping drive detailed, tactical execution. It is critical that this role develop and maintain effective relationships with corporate and business sector management and be viewed as a thought partner by the company’s executives. Specific Responsibilities

  • Lead annual strategic planning across the 5 business units (Cement, West, Central, South & East) as well as across the functions (HR, Finance, Legal, Centers of Excellence, Corporate Development & IT) to arrive at one set of strategically aligned priorities.
  • Leverage the company’s deep operational and industry knowledge to proactively characterize demand trends, the competitive landscape and emerging changes in the industry including digital transformation and ESG.
  • Translate external and internal insights into prioritized high value opportunities and subsequently into corporate and business strategies including defining organic and inorganic growth options within the current value chain and near adjacencies.
  • Build a Strategy Center of Excellence including education on established strategy frameworks, strategic marketing fundamentals, a community of practice and project and/or longer-term rotations through the CSBD group to elevate the organization’s strategic mindset and capabilities.
  • Responsible for day-to-day strategy project execution involving teams of several to many dozen individuals across functions as well as including external service providers.
  • Work closely with the Corporate Development, Innovation and IT teams to continuously refine the acquisition playbook, develop transformative growth opportunities as well as establish innovation and digital transformation priorities. Also provide insights to and align with the Sustainability team.
  • Regularly present market and business analyses, and corporate strategies to the Company’s executives and, as required, the Board of Directors.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experienced strategist, ideally from a premier strategy consulting firm or from a large industrial company with a proven track record of leading cross-functional teams, including external advisors, on strategy deep dive projects.
  • Extremely large analytical skills-ability to design and run market competitive and regulatory insight programs, apply common strategy frameworks, synthesize quantitative and qualitative information to support complex business hypotheses and data drive decisions.
  • Experienced with authoring complete investment theses including comprehensive financial models. Working knowledge of corporate financial statements and GAAP accounting.
  • Strong academic record, MBA strongly preferred.
  • Transparent and accessible leadership style with strong influencing skills and the capability to earn broad based credibility with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Emotionally intelligent executive with demonstrated learning agility-seeks coaching, continuous improvement as well as willingness and ability to learn from experience.
  • Intelligent leader who is a creative problem solver with strong mental stamina.
  • Results driven, develops ambitious goals and establishes clear priorities and responsibilities to achieve them, managing projects activities and resources effectively.
