Location: Ames Highway Design Team, Design Bureau
Shift: Days, Monday through Friday. (Flexible, hybrid work schedules available.)
The Design Bureau is looking to hire a full-time Transportation Engineer Specialist who will be part of the team guiding projects that enhance the state and national transportation systems in Iowa.

The purpose of this position, located within the Methods Section, in the Design Bureau, is to provide coordination and continuity in the advanced planning and design of roadways, interchanges and intersections.
This individual will be an essential member of the team that collaborates with numerous stakeholders to develop innovative transportation improvement plans.
- The individual would join a Team of 13 experts on the Methods Team, consisting of Automation, Standards / Design Manual, and the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) group.
- This position is considered the “Geometrics Engineer” in the Design Bureau and would be tasked with providing expert recommendations to designers in house and staff throughout the Districts / Consultants.
- A typical day may be spent reviewing proposed high level design plans, serving as an expert in meetings and suggesting / writing design improvements to the Design manual.
- The Geometrics Engineer is largely a self-directed position.
Typical Responsibilities:
- Provide design guidance for the geometric design of interchanges, the geometric review of public road intersections and points of private access. Included in those responsibilities are the evaluation and interpretation of current and proposed design criteria, policies, concepts, and methodologies; capacity analysis; technical assistance; and training to department personnel pertaining to geometric concepts.
- Monitor and improve annual cost estimates used for programming.
- Participates in engineering studies of transportation system improvements and develops alternatives for meeting the goals of the identified improvement.
- Analyzes transportation engineering data to determine the optimal operating characteristics for the proposed highway improvement project.
- Produces highway designs that are engineered in harmony with national (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) and Iowa DOT design guidance.
- Participates in a team to produce decisions that balance safety, mobility, environmental impacts, property impacts, cost, and long-term maintenance.
- Provides design and engineering guidance for small to large highly complex highway improvement projects using advanced civil engineering software applications in 3D modeling and visualizations.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) All of the following (a and b):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. Two years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering.
2) All of the following (a, b, and c):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. One year of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering; and
c. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or a field closely related to transportation engineering.
3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer.

Additional Qualification Requirements
Prior to appointment, applicants must possess active licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board.
