Overview
Reporting directly to the Regional President and dotted line to the Chief Strategy & Growth Officer, the Sr. Director of Business Development is a critical leadership role at Summit and will be the lead architect in developing new strategies to support the Market Leadership & Asset Light pillars within the Company’s overall corporate strategy, ELEVATE Summit (see March 2021 investor presentation) in the South region. The region includes Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas & Louisiana. This person could sit in either Houston, TX or Salt Lake City, UT. This role will be responsible for defining, identifying and cultivating acquisition and strategic partnership opportunities that will enhance Summit Materials’ continued profitable growth and create shareholder value. This role will be a key member of the Business Unit’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT) as well as a direct extension of the Corporate Strategy & Business Development (CSBD) team.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Leverage the company’s deep operational and industry knowledge to proactively identify key demand trends, the competitive landscape shifts and emerging regulatory and other changes at the micro-region level. Note, the construction industry operates as a hyper local level.
- Translate trends into inorganic growth strategies including bolt-on acquisitions in existing regions, new platform acquisitions to build leadership positions in adjacent regions, acquisitions of strategic aggregates greenfield reserves as well as asset light investments and partnership options.
- Cultivate deal pipelines through company outreach and relationship development with partner company Principals. Lead in the development of strategic messaging & marketing for prospect interactions, communications, prequalification, proposals and presentations. Utilize industry and technical knowledge to lead presentations at industry events that promote Summit’s culture and brands while strengthening relationships with key stakeholders.
- Responsible for day-to-day M&A project execution involving teams of several to many dozen individuals including detailed progress tracking and coordination of transaction documentation and schedules.
- Engage directly with counterparties to manage due diligence, negotiations and integration planning.
- Drive excellence in the deployment of the “greenfield playbook” with mine development teams including best practices in public zoning and other regulatory processes.
- Author investment theses and present financial forecasts, market and business analyses and growth strategies to the company’s executives. Note, this role will be supported by the CSBD team on valuation modeling as well as transaction document creation/negotiations.
- Coordinate annual strategic planning across the Lines of Businesses (Aggregates, Ready-Mix Concrete, Hot Mix Asphalt and Construction Services) as well as across the functions (HR, Finance, Legal, Centers of Excellence, Corporate Development & IT) to arrive at one set of strategically aligned priorities.
Skills & Experience
- Demonstrated business development experience with a proven track record of growth through acquisitions, joint ventures and other related strategic partnerships.
- Strong analytical skills: ability to synthesize quantitative and qualitative information to formulate inorganic growth strategies – where to play and how to win. Ability to conduct rigorous analysis of aggregates, ready-mix concrete, asphalt and construction services businesses and the markets in which they operate.
- Proficiency with leading many internal and external, cross-functional teams to conduct company due diligence and integration planning. Demonstrated ability to lead complex, cross-functional projects.
- Experienced with authoring complete investment theses including comprehensive financial models. Working knowledge of corporate financial statements including financial forecasting.\
- 10+ years’ experience in the heavy building materials industry.
- Transparent and accessible leadership style with strong influencing skills and the capability to earn broad-based credibility with internal and external shareholders.
- Emotionally-intelligent executive with demonstrated learning agility – seeks coaching, continuous improvement as well as willingness and ability to learn from experience.

Compensation Range:
$190,000.00 - $225,000.00 annually with Short Term Incentive Program eligible
