Overview 

Summit Materials has an exciting opportunity for an Asphalt Skilled Laborer w/ Commercial Driver’s License to join our team. This is a vital role within our asphalt line of business, located in the greater Roanoke, Salem, and Lynchburg – Virginia markets.  The ideal candidate will be flexible and adaptable; able and willing to work outdoors nearly 100% of the time. An applicant with a valid Class A CDL may be hired as a Driver/ Skilled Laborer, a Driver/Paver Operator, a Driver/Roller Operator, a Driver/Asphalt Raker, or a Driver/Paving Screed Controller. This role combines general asphalt physical labor duties with the operation of equipment and commercial trucks, moving and hauling various equipment and materials to and from job sites. We’re seeking reliable team members looking to get their foot in the door in a growing company. These positions are full-time, seasonal with 9+ months of consistent work per year. Overtime can and is often required during peak season (April – November). 

Roles & Responsibilities 

  • Labor intensive activities to include, but not limit to: picking, shoveling, hand or vibro-plate compacting, operating various tools, etc. 
  • Learn assigned tasks, ask questions, and recognize safety concerns 
  • Provide superior service to customers and team members 
  • Operate various Commercial Vehicles
  • A Driver/Roller Operator will have the following responsibilities:
    • Operate controls to guide machine in making successive overlapping passes over the material to be compacted
    • Determines speed and direction of machine based on knowledge of compressibility of materials
    • Operate self-propelled steel wheeled, rubber tired, sheep foot, vibratory, segmented, or other type roller to compact earth, subgrade, subbase, shoulder materials, or stone cover on surface treatment and asphalt surfaces
    • Ability to operate roller in accordance with an approved method of compaction.
    • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections and reports any problems to the mechanic, supervisor or designated person to insure proper maintenance of equipment according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
    • Performs routine fueling, lubrication and servicing of equipment. 
  • A Driver/ Paver Operator will have the following essential functions in addition to the functions related to the Commercial Driver’s License:  
    • Operates controls to guide machine in laying a quality asphalt mat by determining the correct speed and direction of the paver. 
    • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections and reports any problems to the mechanic, supervisor or designated person to insure proper maintenance of equipment according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
    • Performs routine fueling, lubrication, cleaning and servicing of equipment. 
  • A Driver/ Asphalt Raker will have the following essential functions in addition to the functions related to the Commercial Driver’s License:   
    • Shovel, Lute, and Rake Asphalt to obtain correct grade and appearance. 
  • A Driver/ Asphalt Screed Operator will have the following essential functions in addition to the functions related to the Commercial Driver’s License:   
    • Operate the Paver Screed, Shovel, Lute, and Rake Asphalt to obtain correct grade and appearance. 
  • A Driver/ Skilled Laborer will have the following essential functions in addition to the functions related to the Commercial Driver’s License:   
    • Operate at least one piece of equipment; Shovel and Rake Asphalt to obtain correct grade and appearance. 

Skills & Experience 

  • Current valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class A, preferred
  • Possess simple oral and written communication skills, ability to respond quickly to adverse situations
  • Previous experience in the asphalt or construction industry a plus
  • Willingness to work outside daily/year-round
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends as needed
