We are seeking a qualified Early Career Geotechnical Engineer in Chicago or Oak Brook, IL to help grow our national Geostructural and Construction Engineering practice and contribute to innovative and challenging projects.  As a member of our growing and dynamic practice, you will be asked to apply your knowledge of geotechnical engineering to series of technically diverse and unique construction projects involving; heavy-civil and specialty construction, site characterization; earth retaining structures; foundations, soft/weak soils; dams and water containment structures; geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring; numerical analysis of stability and deformation; geohazard/earthquake characterization/mitigation; and forensic investigations and litigation support, while learning the business skills needed for a successful design and consulting career.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This is a position that involves diverse geotechnical engineering project experiences across multiple sectors of the civil engineering and construction industry. Some of the key responsibilities for the position include:

  • Conducting geotechnical field investigations;
  • Monitoring heavy civil construction projects;
  • Fieldwork associated with design and construction services
  • Performing and reviewing engineering calculations, such as slope stability, settlement, capacity of shallow and deep foundations, ground improvement, excavation support and lateral earth pressures, construction dewatering, and seepage;
  • Foundation design including pile caps, mats, footings, and substructures;
  • Liquefaction evaluation;
  • Developing, installing, and managing instrumentation monitoring systems;
  • Data analysis, including preparing maps, tables, and figures;
  • Developing construction documents, including drawings and specifications;
  • Preparation of technical reports, letters, memoranda, and proposals; and
  • Preparing technical documents including reports, calculation packages, CAD drawings, and construction specifications.

  • Training: This position requires OSHA health and safety, first aid, and CPR training and medical monitoring, paid for by the firm.   • Fieldwork: Up to 50%
  • Overnight travel: Up to 30%

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. (required)
  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical). (preferred)
  • Successful completion of the 8-hour NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination. (preferred)

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous work experience in a geotechnical engineering or construction environment. (preferred)
  • At least 2 years of related experience. (preferred)
  • Strong fundamentals in geotechnical engineering theory and practice. (required)
  • Excellent writing and communication skills. (required)
  • Experience with geotechnical engineering software (e.g., GEOSTUDIO, SLIDE, FLAC, PLAXIS, gINT, LPILE, AutoCAD, etc.) and/or numerical methods using spreadsheets. (preferred)
  • Strong fundamentals in structural engineering theory (preferred)
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and related software; AutoCAD and/or GIS. (preferred)
  • Knowledge of design collaboration software (Bluebeam Studio), and operation of CAD/VDC/BIM software (AutoCAD, Revit, etc.). (preferred)
  • Ability to succeed in a fast-paced consulting environment, handling multiple project assignments, and meeting strict deadlines. (required)
  • Current OSHA 10-hr training. (preferred)
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)
