This position is for nonsupervisory work involved in servicing mobile equipment such as automobiles, trucks, buses, forklifts, and bulldozers, road graders, rollers, and similar heavy construction and earth moving vehicles; front-end loaders and backhoes, grinders and heavy special purpose vehicles, pump trucks, over the road trucks, and similar equipment. Typical service includes dispensing gasoline and fuel, checking fluid levels and tire pressures, inflating tires, cleaning equipment, lubricating vehicles and equipment, installing simple accessory items, and changing and repairing tires and tubes.

The work at this grade involves checking oil or water levels in crankcases, power steering, reservoirs, automatic transmissions, batteries, radiators, to equipment as requested and adding fluid to correct levels along with the application of grease to grease points.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Mobile equipment servicers at this grade must be able to operate electrically controlled pumps for dispensing fuel, operate greasing and lubrication systems and cleaning equipment. They must also be able to remove and install wiper blades, light bulbs, and similar items; to check air pressure in tires and inflate to correct pressure; to charge batteries and add distilled water or battery acid as necessary; to take daily meter readings of pumps and "dip-stick" readings of gasoline storage tanks; and to check for presence of water in storage tanks. They may also be required to clean equipment, lubricate fittings, and do other related duties.

 

Essential Qualifications:

 PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Mobile equipment servicers may work in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. They work on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. They perform strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. They frequently lift and carry items, unassisted, weighing up to 50 pounds and often exert similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment. They frequently lift and move heavier items with the assistance of other workers. They are sometimes required to work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work is performed both inside and outside. When inside, they are frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise which is difficult to talk above. When outside, they sometimes work in bad weather, in mud or snow, and in wet or icy areas. Both inside and outside, workers are exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes. They typically work on parts and systems which are dirty, oily, or greasy. They are subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, while positioning, and servicing equipment. They follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as protective hearing devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use and may be worn or used for long periods
