Summary

  • The Design Professional is a managerial level position. At this level, the Design Professional working under a Design Manager makes decisions with broad influence on the design activities of assigned projects for the Design Team.
  • The Design Professional demonstrates a high degree of creativity, foresight, and mature judgement in planning, organizing, designing, and detailing the specific design aspects of assigned projects for the Design Teams.
  • The Design Professional will report to the Director of Engineering, Design Executive, or Design Manager, as assigned, and will perform the primary design function for the structural discipline on the project.
  • The Design Professional is a key member of the Project Design Team and is responsible for seamlessly integrating the structural design function into the overall project design.

 

General Characteristics

  • Has a thorough knowledge of current principles and practices of engineering for the structural discipline and how to coordinate with other disciplines for project coordination.
  • Has broad knowledge and skills in design.
  • Evaluates, selects, and applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform tasks for conventional projects with medium to complex features.
  • Collaboratively uses judgement to determine adaptation in methods for nonroutine aspects of assignments.
  • Coordinates work on projects having medium to high-level complexity and scope.

 

Responsibilities

Technical

  • Performs moderate to complex design tasks. Designs complete project, system, component, or process.
  • Responsible for acquiring and understanding required design information, field measurements, technical specifications, etc. to maintain the project design schedule.
  • Serves as a technical specialist for the department in the application of advanced concepts, principles, and methods for structural discipline.
  • Prepares technical standards and guidelines for use on design projects.
  • Research materials used for design projects.
  • Prepares and edits technical/ product specifications.
  • Assist assigned design team members, engineers, and project managers with day-to-day project functions, as needed, including researching product specifications, contacting vendors, and other support functions as needed.
  • Reviews, comments and approves - “For-Construction” Shop Drawings and Submittals.
  • Performs code and material research and on-site investigations required to obtain information.
  • Create, markup, and make changes to existing PDF documents using Procore, Adobe, Blue Beam, or similar electronic project management software to keep projects current.
  • Maintain technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, In-House seminars and presentations and reviewing relevant technical publications.

 

Managerial

  • Receives direct supervision and guidance with assignments given in terms of specific objectives, relative priorities, critical issues, and limits.
  • Works as member of assigned Team with other Engineers, Designers, Consultants, and CAD/BIM Technicians.
  • Maintains professional engineering licenses in States as determined by senior level management.
  • Works with consultants as required to provide comprehensive design drawings for Projects.
  • Develops discipline specific budgets and schedules required to accomplish design for assigned projects.
  • Monitor discipline specific design budget tracking.
  • Develops and presents Pre-Construction Manuals and drawings for on-site meetings and performs cross check or peer review of projects for compliance with project criteria.
  • Assist in developing standards and guidelines for Engineering Department.
  • Adheres and defines Forcum Lannom Contractors practices, policies, and procedures for document revision control.

 

Qualifications

Experience Required:

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer who will be responsible charge for specific Engineering Discipline on Design Projects.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in structural design related to Building Construction.
  • Understanding of AutoCAD and Revit.  The ability to draft is a strong plus.
  • Strong understanding of design fundamentals and practices.
  • Knowledge of Construction Industry and Engineering Principles.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (spelling grammar and clarity of communication)
  • Computer proficient with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite

 

Education Required:

  • BS or MS in Engineering with licensure as a Professional Engineer in Tennessee and additional States as requested.

 

Skills/Aptitudes:

  • Customer focused, results-oriented professional and strong team player.
  • Self-supervising within guidance and expectations of Design Project Requirements.
  • Strong communications and organization skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, projects and stay organized.

 

Efficiency:

  • Planning required to optimize assigned Project Directives and Team personnel.
  • Adherence to Design Schedules/ Budget/ Quality Product.
