ABOUT THE ROLE
The Family Support Specialist (FSS) reports to the Director of Early Learning and operates out of our Burien branch. The FSS role is an essential component of the Parents as Teacher (PAT) affiliate model. The Family Support Specialist advances Childhaven’s mission, vision, values, and goals by providing culturally relevant home-based parenting education and support to caregivers who are parenting children under six years old. To be successful in this role you must be able to establish relationships with at-risk youth and families, and manage the needs of an assigned caseload.
- Assist families in identifying their child’s strengths and needs and develop plans to ensure they have access to any services for which they are eligible.
- Assist parents in a variety of areas (e.g., filling out forms/surveys; health; nutrition; living skills; budgeting; job skills; goal setting; etc.) for the purpose of developing an action plan to remove barriers to child’s success in school and supporting the family in basic life skills and economic stability.
- Recruit and enroll eligible children and families. Encourage family involvement in program.
- Visit children’s homes for the purpose of enrolling students in program, interviewing parents, informing parents of school and/or community resources and providing child development/parenting information, and setting family goals.
- Develop individualized health, nutrition, and family support plans for all enrolled children for the purpose of furthering family goals, plans, and success strategies.
- Provide outreach to low-income communities, community leaders and organizations for the purpose of recruiting families to Healthy Start, developing resources, and building partnerships with community members.
- Maintain relationships with social service agencies and family service providers in the community so that outside referrals can be made in a timely manner as needed.
- Maintains a variety of manual and electronic documents, files, and records for the purpose of providing required information and/or documentation.
- Screen new referrals to ensure the program is appropriate for their needs, provide an initial needs assessment, complete onboarding paperwork, and provide timely follow-up with referring agencies.
- Provide culturally competent home visits to each participant 2 times per month using the Parents as Teachers

- Assist in the planning and implementation of monthly group meetings.
- Conduct annual developmental progress assessments that include social-emotional, vision, hearing, and health issues.
- Actively participate in reflective supervision meetings, team meetings and monthly staff meetings.
- Participate in professional development opportunities regarding antiracism, oppression, and cultural competency and regularly assess own performance and program for related improvements.
- Participate in ongoing job-related professional development, in-service trainings, and continuing education.
- Comply with all Childhaven policies and procedures.
- Comply with the agency’s policy and procedure regarding the identification and reporting of child abuse.
- Associate’s degree or higher with the equivalent of 30 college quarter credits* in Early Childhood Education or closely related field. These 30 credits may be included in the degree or in addition to it.
- May have a CDA credential or a state-awarded certificate that meets or exceeds the requirements of a CDA credential with a focus on Infant and Toddler Development.
- Fingerprinting and background check.
- Able to obtain First Aid and CPR certification with 90 days of hire.
- Able to obtain Food & Beverage Handler’s Permit within 30 days of hire.
- Completion of a one-step Mantoux tuberculosis (TB) skin test, or written proof of a negative test within 12 months prior to hire.
- Knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices for infants and toddlers and relate positively to staff and volunteers in a diverse environment.
- Ability to adjust to varied situations, demands, and new instructional concepts.
- Ability to perform basic clerical tasks such as recordkeeping, filing, typing, copying, etc.
- Ability to attend occasional evening meetings.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
*C-5 College Credit
When college credit is required for ECEAP staff, the following applies:
- College credit must be earned from an accredited institution of higher education.
- 1 college semester credit = 1.5 college quarter credits.
- Staff may replace up to 1/3 of required college credits with workshop hours related to the job description, at the rate of ten (10) classroom hours to one (1) college credit. This does not apply to requirements for a college degree. Acceptable workshop hours are Washington State Training and Registry System (STARS) approved training. Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) approved clock hours, in-service training, conferences, or training provided by agencies specializing in professional development.
- Credit counted for staff qualifications, such as specific 12 or 30 credit requirements for Teachers and Family Support Specialists must be directly related to the job description.
- Early Childhood Education (ECE) credit is coursework with content closely related to the Washington State STARS Core Competencies and predominantly address children from birth to 8 years old.
- Staff requirements for an Associate’s degree allow any “two-year” community or technical college degree of 90 quarter credits or more, including degrees designated as AA, AAS, AAS-T, ATA, or AD.
- Equivalent degrees and credentials from other states and countries are accepted.
