Hutchinson County is looking for a Full-time Deputy Register of Deeds/Equalization Office Clerk. This position is responsible for the complete, accurate, efficient recording of legal instruments as directed by law; including but not limited to the recording of real estate deeds, mortgages, contracts, and assignments; issuing of marriage licenses, certified copies of vital records and filing of burial permits, including the maintenance of all vital records for the county.  The collection of fees as prescribed by law in a manner for the benefit of the county and its residents, within the requirements of the South Dakota Codified Laws and Regulations. This position requires a certain degree of confidentiality, careful attention to detail and 100% accuracy. Additionally, this position will support the Equalization office.

As a Deputy Register of Deeds/Equalization Clerk, here’s what you’ll get to do:

  • Be responsible and accountable for accurate, efficient and complete recording and maintenance of all legal documents and related instruments as directed by law; including real estate deeds, mortgages, contracts and assignments; for all transactions within the county
  • Process vital record requests and assist customers with genealogical research
  • Ensure accurate collection and transmission of proper fees for recording and transfer fees, and any other money collected in the office
  • Complete real estate inquiry requests made by the public either in person, telephone or email
  • Carry the responsibility of the Register of Deeds in absence of the official
  • Accurately file, index and maintain Federal, State, Mechanics, County Aid and UCC (Uniform Commercial Code) Liens including the collection of fees as required by law
  • Record, maintain and issue certified copies of Military Discharge records
  • File and maintain Fictitious Business Name Filings
  • Support the Equalization office
  • And more!

What you need to be eligible:

  • High school / GED or a combination of education, training and experience required.
  • Knowledge of legal descriptions helpful
  • Type accurately with great attention to detail and accuracy
  • Hutchinson County resident preferred
  • Highly organized
  • Basic office skills and have computer knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Effectively interact with public courteously
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Perform simple accounting, basic cashiering, mathematical computations and skilled in working on projects
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department heads
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive professional relationships with other employees, agencies of government, and the general public
  • Able to adapt to changes and multitask
  • Legally able to work in the United States
  • Able to reach at floor level and above head, pick up and handle books weighing up to 30 pounds
