General Summary Description:

The Director of Business Development serves at the discretion of the Executive Vice President with a dotted line to the VP of Materials & Quality. This role is responsible for maintaining, building, and developing new business relationships to expand the Company's residential development and private commercial portfolio. It demands a passion for heavy civil construction, a profound understanding of the industry, and expertise in building connections.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Market Expertise:

  • Collaborate with Senior Management to establish trust in the market and report actionable intelligence.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the public works market, including our suppliers and competitors, along with industry trends.
  • Stay current with pricing fluctuations, quality standards, specifications, and industry regulations.
  • Identify when communities are considering substitute or complementary products.

Relationship Building:

  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with purchasers of asphalt materials, distributors, and key stakeholders.
  • This includes the Department of Transportation, Political Subdivisions (County, City & School District), and retail customers (laydown contractors).
  • Serve as the primary resource conduit for asphalt technical solutions.
  • Identify and engage potential industry partners and customers.
  • Collaborate closely with internal allies within the organization.

Transaction Understanding:

  • Develop expertise in the intricacies of transportation-related purchasing transactions, including pricing models, contracts, and delivery logistics.
  • Provide guidance and support to clients in optimizing their asphalt procurement processes.
  • Collaborate with the VP of Quality on purchasing strategies for inputs.

Lead Generation and Sales:

  • Generate and qualify leads for purchasing opportunities.
  • Assist in implementing a company-wide CRM system, Hubspot.
  • Work alongside the sales team to convert leads into successful transactions.

Negotiation and Deal Closure:

  • Negotiate favorable terms and conditions for asphalt procurement contracts.
  • Lead the closing of deals and ensure customer satisfaction.

Sales Strategy Development:

  • Collaborate with the senior management team to formulate sales strategies and goals.
  • Work closely with the Director of Marketing to develop campaigns, advertising, and marketing initiatives.
  • Develop and implement plans to achieve and exceed targets.

Networking and Industry Engagement:

  • Attend relevant asphalt and public works industry events, conferences, and associations.
  • Continue to build and maintain a strong professional network and stay informed about market developments.
  • Represent SB in the community by participating in local, regional, and national organizations, including charitable work.

Minimum Requirements, Abilities and Expectations

  • Bachelor's degree in business, engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in business development, sales, or procurement within the asphalt industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of public works market including products, pricing structures, and purchasing processes.
  • Strong negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented with a track record of success.
